Our home was last owned by someone from the tropics. The 2nd floor hallway and kitchen had 1970s paneling which they painted yellow, with brick trim around the doors. When we moved in, we painted most of the rest of that floor, but left the kitchen and hallway more or less as they were.
Since I'm not working for money at the moment, I decided to work on refurbishing them. I have replaced the paneling that has been missing in the kitchen.
In an attempt to save money, I decided to try to get a sheet rock look by spackling the paneling grooves and repainting. After hours and hours of work, I recommend that you just put up sheet rock. I can't believe that the time it has taken to get a half-assed appearance in the hallway would have been required to put up sheet rock. Ah, well. It gives us the opportunity to try things out. It may even look good after another coat of paint or using a textured roller to put color over the white.
We'll see.
