So, today I finished going over the Steampunk Musha d20 RPG. Because of the Open Game License, we had the chance to use some really good Asian-flavor content that needed to be adapted to the setting, so over the past two weeks, I've been adding details, flavor text, and generally converting mechanics to the Rosuto-Shima setting. Here's a question for ya. What narrative books would you recommend to introduce one to the Steampunk setting for someone who's never played before? Novels, short stories and such?

Here's me showing my lack of knowledge... I don't think I've read *any* prose that's Steampunk. Most of my feel for that type of setting comes from comics, movies, and video games. If I were focusing on the steampunk aspects, I'd recommend League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (the comic), probably just the first volume. I think it gives a real feel for the Victorian setting with the more-advanced technology.

sweet about SM!

I've got a project that's been on hold FOREVER with a small RPG that claims to be waiting until 4th is out to "convert" the project... bleah. Never work with them again.

it does seem like 4th is NOT getting off to a good start...

Honestly, I think it's off to a fine start for WotC. ;) It's just all the small RPG companies that have to either pay the $5000 to be able to release their products this summer, or wait until January 2009. The market is, to some degree, holding its breath to see what the fall out will be...

(I'm actually looking forward to 4e, though, so I'm not among the dissenters...)
