When the news reaches you (he doesn't tell you; he tells Vivian, who tells Danny, who tells you) that he isn't leaving after all, the word 'Divorce' floats in front of your eyes. You are relieved you weren't the one to cause it (you can't have been, right?), but in the same instant, you wish it was still a year ago. A year ago, you weren't so hardened, you still believed in things like happy endings (that you were his) and true love (that he was yours).
Martin is so (predictably) sweet and good, and even now, with his arm around your waist, it breaks you heart to know that someday you will break his. You resist the impulse to run away, snuggle your body closer to his instead. He smiles, ruffles your hair. The crushing weight on your chest tells you that this is perfect (and so domestic).
You close your eyes tight, and pretend this is what you've always wanted.
