We went looking at apartments today. The first one, the realtor was late. It's a condo in a nice area. (What's the difference between a condo and a town home? We didn't know.) It's a nice enough place, lots of kitchen area, dining room, living room. Then upstairs there's a loft living area space (reading room, anyone? :P ) and two bedrooms and two bathrooms. There's also another entrance upstairs. Fireplace downstairs, off the street parking (even though it's one space per apartment and it's a very tight fit back there), and two balconies, one off the dining room downstairs and one off the upstairs living area. I don't know if it's pet friendly. There's a pool. There's construction going on in the back to improve the walkways to the apartments/condos, whatever they are. The owner's asking $800; we're offering $650-700. Bonus: The owner wants to rent quickly. So we may get that.
The cheapest place we looked at was also the farthest from everything. Except the best bbq in KC and the grocery store. Kitchen had absolutely no room; not even enough for two of us in there at the same time. Well, at least not if we were in there trying to work. And I've found I like cooking with Nate. My apartment now has more room, which is saying something. I have about as much counterspace as the top of a dishwasher. The microwave takes up a big chunk. I want more kitchen room. Also, the lady pissed Nate off by taking our drivers' licenses when we went to look at the apartment. He says that's a trick of car salesmen, to take the license and run a credit check while you're looking at cars.
The other place we looked was very nice. Hardwood floors in living room and dining room, linoleum in kitchen and bathroom, carpet in the bedrooms. Gas stove, which I've never used, so I'd have to learn, lots of closet space, free off-street parking, intercom system with the front door. If I didn't have cats, I'd've jumped on it. However. $300 pet deposit per pet. $600 for my cats. $400 of that nonrefundable. Or I could pay $200 plus a bonding fee. Luckily, Nathan is knowledgeable and told me that the bonding thing is paying a third party to come collect damages if there are any once we move out. Uh-uh. No thanks. I don't think my cats would piss on the carpet, and I know they wouldn't do damage with their claws, but I don't need the worry of someone calling me at all hours trying to collect money for new carpet.
Then there's a place just around the corner from me (no, literally, around the corner. Walk west .25 blocks, turn north, walk .5 block, and there it is) that is listed online. It has 2 bedrooms open, and it seems pretty nice. Upper price range is $665, plus there's washer/dryer in the apartment, which is a big deal. We already know we like the neighborhood, there's off-street parking, pet-friendly, and? It's right around the corner. Easy move, at least as far as hauling things. Easy on the gas money, for sure. I called the leasing office and left a message; I hope they get back to me.
If my place wasn't so damn small, I wouldn't mind staying here. Nate wouldn't mind. But like I told him today, I love him, but it's very stressful being in the same room with him all the time. With two cats who go batshit crazy.
