So that's it. Four and a half years at Baylor culminated into an early morning, a walk across a stage and an IOU in my diploma tube. (They have to affix the Honors seal on it - I should get it in "3-4 weeks." Here's hoping.) Interim President Underwood gave a very uplifting (for me) speech. He spoke about the direction of Christian education and the danger of subscribing to orthodoxy. He suggested that though we should not ignore the intellectual work that came before us, we should think for ourselves. He recalled a time, as recent as the sixties, when black students were not allowed to study at Baylor University because it would have been wrong according to scripture. He acknowledged that even those who are so-called masters of scripture are only human, and err as much as the rest of us. He asked us to recall the Pharisees and how they stuck rigidly to the letter of the law, and ignored its intent. It was on the whole the most sincere and encouraging statement I have had the opportunity to hear come from a Baylor administrator. I hope that this is a sign of things to come.
