I still consider myself a bit of a newbie in this fandom (going on two years, barely) so I always find it interesting when the 'original' stuff gets talked about, because for the most part, I have no idea what it is.
I ship canon, but have no real objections to reading anything thats been well written, so I might go have a look. Thanks!
Ahaha, while I'm very fond of it because of what it means to me (*violins*) I'm not sure I'd recommend it, because I'm pretty sure that the early chapters are pre-GoF. Yes, pre-GoF. I'm guessing if you're like me (I discovered fan fic just after OotP), your brain hurts if an adult Sirius walks into a story. I cannot really cope when this happens.
lol, but you see, I slogged through the entirety of After The End. If adult!Sirius ever had a prominent role...eh, it was actually a pretty good read, although very very long and very very AU. Still.
And yes, believe you me...I didn't find fandom until well after HBP had been released, so a LOT of older fics were made AU before I had a chance to read them. The whole shipping thing was a pretty foreign concept to me too. I don't think I even recognized the relationships growing in the books until JKR blew them open in HBP, so there was never any question about who was with who or whatever. Not that that really has anything to do with anything, but there you go...
I think I fail Harry/Ginny 101 by never having read that. I think something really upset me in the first chapter and I never continued with it. Heh. Maybe I'll set aside a day for it in the summer.
Same here, while I loved the romance that she gave us, I never really thought, "OK, Harry should be with Hermione/Ginny/Luna, and stop wasting time on Cho" during the reading. I went with whatever; the best way to describe it is probably as being a Harry/Sex shipper. Harry/Ginny didn't even occur to me. Then I found fandom and was all THIS IS THE BEST THING EVER. Luckily I picked the winning side. Pre-HBP shipping wank was a lot of fun, but in some ways I envy you, because reading HBP after 18 months of reading Harry/Ginny sixth year fics was ... kind of unpleasant.
I came to fandom pretty late and never read most of those huge epic pre-OotP fics, either. But AtE was the bible for the R/Hr, H/G people back in the day. Probably the only thing they could agree on with the H/Hr types who read PoU, and the H/D, D/G, H/Hr, D/Hr, -whatever types who read the Draco Trilogy, was that Sirius was awesome and finally Harry had a positive role model who was going to be there for him. :P
