(277) Third Post

So after I posted that first question about Bacon for Philosophy a while ago, I didn't touch the discussion board for a long time. A few days ago, I made a short response to a discussion about Christian themes in Plato, but today I wrote a big kicker - a response over a page long on Marx's Communism, over whether it is self-contradictory and how Rand portrays it in Atlas Shrugged. I was surprised by the length myself - I didn't realize it was so long! In any case, it's the third post out of 15 that I have to do for the class in order to receive at least 80% for that portion - that was an error earlier, when I said I had write only 8. So it's slow going, but I'm working on it!

Incidentally, I have a 5-6pg philosophy paper due in a week. The two topics I'm considering:

1) What is the value of scientific knowledge and how does its value relate to its contribution to the production of the things we need to sustain and enjoy our lives? Discuss the views of at least two of the philosophers we have studied in addition to giving and supporting your own position.

2) Contrast Marx's view of money with Rand's (as expressed by Francisco d'Anconia). Explain the deeper premises that stand behind the respective views and take a position as to which is more convincing.

Both are meaty enough that I can write substantially on them, and are interesting enough for me to work on. I'm leaning a little towards the second one, but for some reason I don't feel like reading Atlas Shrugged, so I don't know. The first one we've discussed in class fairly often, so I know how I would answer it, while the second would be more material original to myself. Which to choose?

classes, deep thinking
