Just...Friends...

She was gone, gone from his life.

Shishido remembered the day he told her he wanted to be just friends.

“What?” she let out, not believing what he had said.

“I said…” Shishido looked everywhere but at her. “Let’s just be friends.”

“You…” She stared at him, eyes wide open. “You are kidding…right?” her voice was shaking slightly.

“I’m not…” Shishido said in a very small voice. He could not bear to face her.

Uncomfortable silence hung between them for a while.

“Why?” She said in a voice laced with hurt, breaking the silence.

It was at this moment Shishido finally garnered enough courage to look at her, and he regretted it. Her lips were white and her eyes looked as if they were going to water very soon. She was taking in calculated breaths, as if to control her emotions.

“Is there…someone else?” she asked slowly.

“No! No…” Shishido replied hastily. “It’s just…just…”

“Just what!” She raised her voice slightly.

“Just that…I feel we will be more comfortable as friends.” He said. Many people have commented that the both of them were more like friends than lovers. Shishido began to think so, probably because she was so tomboyish. As lovers, they were constricted in many ways. He felt that if they were friends, their relationship would be more at ease.

“It’s not because of you!” Shishido quickly continued. “It’s because of me…I feel that our relationship would be better if we were friends…” he looked up at her.

She was biting her lip and her head hung slightly down. Shishido knew she was trying to stop herself from crying. It hurt him to see her like that, but…but…now, he could do nothing. “We would be better off as friends.” That’s what he thought. She did not say anything else, as she turned her back towards him and walked away.

Shishido gazed at her retreating figure, back slightly bent. The back of her right hand was up to her eyes. He knew she was crying, but she fought not to give out any sound. His heart ached to see her like that.

“It’s for the better. It’s for the better.” Shishido kept repeating in his head. He failed to notice that his fist was so tightly clenched they left marks on his palm.

The breakup was difficult for both parties. Both of them avoided each other as much as possible. Shishido did not know how, but news of their breakup was quickly spread to the entire Hyotei. Her suitors were back. His friends pestered him about it. Ohtori was the most concerned. After all, both of them were his buddies.

“Shishido-san, did you guys quarrel again?” Ohtori asked worriedly. “If it’s just a quarrel, I can talk to her! You both do not need to break up because of a little tiff!”

“Choutaro, we didn’t quarrel.” Shishido said softly. “Please, this is our matter.”

With that, Ohtori refrained from discussing that matter anymore. However he was still worried. He knew she had cried her heart out and was only pretending to be strong and cheerful again. As for Shishido, Ohtori noticed he was not in the best of moods either. He decided to let nature take its course. After all, this can only be solved by the both of them. Outsiders have no right to interfere.

Shishido was walking around Hyotei one day when by accident, he met her. Their eyes stared straight into each other, holding surprise and awkwardness in them.

“Er…hi…” Shishido struggled to get out.

“H…hi…” she replied uneasily.

An uncomfortable silence reigned between them again. Both of them did not know what to say next. This time, it was Shishido who broke the silence.

“So…how have you been doing? I haven’t seen you around in a while.” Shishido wanted to hit himself for saying such stupid things. Of course he hasn’t seen her around in a while, he had been avoiding her!

“I’m fine…thank you…” Her eyes were fixed on the ground.

“We…we…are still friends right?” Shishido asked.

She looked up at him for an instance before giving him a small smile. “Mmm.” She answered.

Shishido’s eyes widened. It has been a while since he had seen her smile. But he wondered if she was hiding anything beneath the smile.

“I have to go now. See you around, Shishido-san.” She smiled at him before leaving.

Shishido’s heart skipped a beat as he heard that. “Shishido-san.” Somehow, he felt hugely disappointed and his heart aching.
