3 For 8

It looks as though I was successful in only 5 out of the 13 categories that I made predictions. Mariah still had a good night with 3 wins out of 8. Also, she nailed her performance of Fly Like A Bird with a short We Belong Together intro. I believe her next single, officially from her label, will be Fly Like A Bird, the song she performed after the ( Read more... )

Even back when I cared more about contemporary pop/rock/R&B, the Grammys were always my least favorite of the Oscar/Emmy/Grammy trifecta, but I'll comment on a few things.

<< Category 2 - Album Of The Year
The Emancipation Of Mimi - Mariah Carey
Chaos And Creation In The Backyard - Paul McCartney
Love. Angel. Music. Baby.- Gwen Stefani
How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb - U2
Late Registration - Kanye West
U2 my ass! Ha! I am most upset about this one as Mariah should have had this. >>

Again, I know nothing, but I would have expected Kanye West to win, because his was the most critically acclaimed and ostensibly "groundbreaking" of these. U2's album was widely considered just middling, both by critics and fans -- not a dud like "Pop," but certainly no classic like "Achtung Baby" or "All That You Can't Leave Behind."

<< Category 3 - Song Of The Year
Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own - (U2)
I am a little baffled here as I had never even heard of this U2 song until I sought it out after the nominations. >>

I am shocked to hear you say that. Truly. I could not avoid it from late 2004 through mid-2005, and got sick of it. It's another of their patented anthemic, "redemptive" ballads, but as I said when we were talking earlier, it's hardly "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" or "One" or "Walk On." It turns up a lot in TV dramas. It's a popular choice for those shows that end the episode with a musical montage of various characters going to bed, drinking in a bar, crying, staring at a phone, whatever.

<< Category 5 - Best Female Pop Vocal Performance
Since U Been Gone - Kelly Clarkson
Kelly deserved this and I'm glad she got it. >>

I have to give her credit. I loathe "American Idol" and everything it represents, and this isn't the kind of music I personally would choose to put on at my house, but she has a great voice and sings with a lot of conviction and probably will be around for the long haul. When I found out who it was singing this song and "Behind These Hazel Eyes," I was surprised it was her. She doesn't sound like any kid; she sounds 30, and I mean that in a good way.

<< Category 6 - Best Male Pop Vocal Performance
From The Bottom Of My Heart - Stevie Wonder
I just really like Jack Johnson and felt he was overlooked here. >>

I need to hear the Stevie Wonder album. It got mixed reviews when it was released, and although I think he's a legend and doesn't have to prove a damn thing to any of us, I haven't cared for his new music from the 1980s on. "Hotter Than July" from 1980 is the most recent album of his I actually own. Part of it is that his material itself got weaker/uneven, and part of it is his over-reliance on those fucking godawful synthesizers he started using on every song in the 1980s. When you listen to "I Just Called To Say I Love You" or "Part-Time Lover" today, whatever you think of the songs themselves, they *sound* dreadful -- like a little kid messing around with a $30 piece of Casio junk in the toy department at Target.

<< Category 7 - Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal
This Love - Maroon 5>>

You know, I kind of like "This Love" (*that* actually sounds like a classic Stevie Wonder track; I understand they're fans of his), but how in the world does this qualify for consideration, when the album "Songs About Jane" was released in June 2002 and the song was released as a single in March 2003? (I double-checked those dates.) That's something I always hated about the Grammys, in addition to their often-bizarre judgments and reactionary tastes -- the eligibility rules are byzantine, bordering on incomprehensible. At least with the Oscars, it's simple: if a movie opened somewhere in the US between Jan 1 and Dec 31, even if just in one city, it's eligible. If not, it's not.

Anyway, I'm so happy to see no mentions of "My Humps" as a nominee for anything. That song makes me contemplate an ax-murderering spree, which I guess is an achievement of some kind, but there's no category for it.

I was scared Kanye would win, as well. I like his music, but I wanted him to NOT win solely because of his attitude. He's a great producer. He worked on a song or two on Mariah's album, and was then quoted on saying he deserved to win over Mariah. HA! On a side note, the one song I can remember him producing from Mariah's cd, Stay The Night, was a song she really wanted to release as a single, but LA Ried and her label would not allow it as they didn't feel it would perform as well as others on the cd. I think it'd do great as a 5th or 6th single.

Nope, I had never heard it and when I did tonight I was not impressed. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a U2 hater. I loved Beautiful Day, Walk On, whatever that song they did for Tomb Raider, older stuff (I'm remember Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me or whatever that Batman Forever song was).

I LOATHE American Idol, also. I used to really not like Ms. Clarkson. I thought she was ok when Miss Independent was released and gained a slight bit more credibility with The Trouble With Love. This new cd really did it for me. I went months loving Breakaway and not knowing it was her. I almost peed myself when I found out it was her. Then she had Since U Been Gone, which was great. I wasn't the biggest fan of Behind These Hazel Eyes, at first, but it grew on me. Because Of You is great. Also another song on the cd, track 5, Gone, is one of my favorites. Coincidentally, Yancy was the one who turned me on to her.

Yeah, This Love is a good one. Maroon 5 has a distinct sound. I don't think they're groundbreaking or anything, but good yes.

Haha I love My Humps! I actually don't like the music of the Black Eyed Peas with the exception of this song and maybe 1 or 2 other singles. In my opinion, this song ranks right up there with Hollaback Girl. It's a great, mindless, fun, ass thumping tune. Nothing meaningful to it, but it's good times. I love Gwen, but had Hollaback Girl won Record of the Year I would have been inconsolable.
