Reading fail on my part: I looked (more than once!) at the list of requests topics for the December talking même and thought I didn't have anything until the 12th. Totally missed the topic
athousandsmiles suggested for Dec. 1st. I'm so sorry! Here 'tis.
Favorite female character/What makes a great female character?
Picking a favorite is sooooo hard. Darn well impossible. I have a lot, and they aren't all the same type. A rough list, in no particular order, and with the certainty that I'll remember so many names as soon as I post:
Jo March, Anne Shirley, Tiffany Aching, Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg, Kit Tyler, Kivrin Engle, Morgan Le Fey, Flavian deLuce, Calpurnia Tate, Buffy Summers--and Faith, Cordy, Willow, Anya, Tara--Dana Scully, Marissa Clark, Toni Brigatti, Martha Jones, Dani Reese, Tami Taylor, Jess Merriweather, Tyra Colette, Liz Lemon, Leslie Knope, Katniss Everdeen, Abbie Mills, Joan Watson, Natasha Romanoff, Maria Hill, Peggy Carter, Catherine di Medici (as played by Megan Follows), all the clones, starting with Sarah Manning, but really all of them--there are more who am I forgetting oh gawd I'm forgetting so mannnnnyyy...
But you get the idea. I like strong women, but there are so many different ways to be strong, and so many ways to be vulnerable in the midst of strength.
I like women who are funny, or snarky, or who have some sense of humor about the world.
I like women who walk into battle, whatever that battle may be, armed or not, even when they're terrified. Because they're protecting someone or because they believe it's right or because they don't have any other choice.
I like women who have bullshit detectors that are always on.
I like women who give and guard their hearts.
I like women who don't see other women as potential enemies just because they're women.
I like women who tell the stories that shape the world.
I like women who find ways to wield whatever power they have, or can acquire within the confines of their worlds. I especially like it when they use that power to break the boundaries of those worlds.
And I like witches, whether or not that's what they're called in their stories. :)
