Impossible by
Nancy Werlin My rating:
3 of 5 starsImpossible started out with a very interesting premise. I was thoroughly intrigued by the character of Lucy, her insane mother, foster family and the handsome boy she'd grown up with. It began dreamlike and drew me right in.
However about a quarter of the way through the book the author lost me. The writing became very expository, the characters didn't grow in depth or seem to have any personality at all. Things that would naturally traumatize any teenager were dealt with almost flippantly, and the love story was incredibly unrealistic. Some of the more important scenes in the book were skipped and vaguely flashed upon later, and there was very little depth to the plot. To me it felt like the characters were always determined and cheerful and everyone seemed to take on the magical instances in the book without much thought about it.
The switching point of view also became a burden as each character was written quite the same, and again there were few details about what made these characters tick. The reader is given slight information on each character but very little on their past and what makes them who they are. I would have loved to see a lot more conflict (especially of the inner variety), and more time spent on the important, dramatic and painful scenes instead of recalling them briefly months later.
I didn't get to connect with the characters and was at times frustrated with their choices, especially the male lead. Quite frankly people are never perfect, and the idea that this attractive, talented and sensitive boy would give up everything and fall in love in about 25 pages was not romantically fulfilling, had no tension and wasn't very realistic.
Overall the writer is very talented, and the premise of the book was unique and interesting, but it felt a bit rushed and didn't have the conflict and tension I like to see in a story.
