So, my friend, Dana from HIU, posted something that hits dead-on my own conscience re: Bible reading in her new blog,
mybiblereadingjourney.blogspot.com. Her first post could be from me. So I had a look through my memory, and think I can honestly say I have read the entire New Testament at one time or another. But, the Old Testament, I think I've read maybe four entire books of it. I've not even read the entire Psalms. :-P So, I want to try again, with Dana.
This is what she posted, that really grabbed me:
"I wonder what would happen if we treated our Bible like we treat our cell phones-
What if we carried it around in our purses or pockets
What if we turned back to get it if we forgot it
What if we flipped through it several times a day
What if we used it to receive messages from the text
What if we treated it like we couldn't live without it
What if we gave it to youth as gifts
What if we used it as we traveled
What if we used it in case of an emergency

And, this would be soooo good! We got a book from my MIL re: parenting from a Bible-based standpoint, with a topical collection of Bible verses and age-appropriate activities for teaching our children how to handle any given situation, and how to turn to the Scriptures first when any question arises. We have it in the bathroom and pick it up fairly often to browse when detained there for a while. But even just looking at it is convicting.
I've gotten so bad about even getting to church any more, and it feels like quotes from movies or some TV series or other pop into my head far more swiftly than God's word. I KNOW this is not the best, not good in any way, really. And even the thought of changing makes a wave of fatigue and ennui wash over me. *growl* I don't want to be content to veg in my spiritual mediocrity. I'm going to read some OT book before bed. And I'm going to pick one topic on which to memorize relevant passages. I'm not going to commit to a time-line though. Just a spreadsheet, like Dana, to check off on as I succeed.
