Grandpa Smith

Nov 12, 2007 07:19

Dad had called while I was driving home from work and let me know Grandpa Smith had had a major stroke and wasn't inclined to stay alive with the difficulties with movement, pain and inability to communicate. As soon as Greg got home we agreed my traveling down to see them would be a good idea, and Grandma answered the phone at home, so we knew where they were, home. He's set up on a hospital bed in the living room and Grandma tootles about on her power chair when she's not snoozing.

Grandpa slept most of the time I was there. Mike, Marion's husband, was over to fix Grandma a meal, which was wonderful. That's exactly what she needs most, meals and help moving Grandpa every two hours or so. She is pretty tired and was a little vague when I arrived, but after the meal you could see color returning to her face and firmness to her voice.

She watches Grandpa pretty constantly. Mike said he took some water today, so they are more hopeful for him. He coughs with phlegm and grunts or moves in his sleep fairly regularly. I slipped into the kitchen to talk to Mike so she could snooze a bit, and she sat and held his hand. She loves him very much. *sigh* So do I. I've been wishing I had visited when I'd thought about it, which was pretty regularly, rather than waiting for something like this to push me to it.

Anywho. Rebecca seems to like the hum of the car when I'm driving, and neither of us had any trouble with the trip. I snoozed at a couple of rest stops when I got sleepy, and stopped for the night on the way down at Mom's in Portland. I grabbed another three hour nap there on the way home. Grandma last saw me at my heaviest before the removal of my adrenals, and so she was tickled with how healthy I look and how slim everything except the baby has become. I brought all my sonogram pictures to share and she exclaimed over the clarity of the pictures.

I gotta hit the road to work now, having slept well last night. (((HUGS))) and prayers to you and everyone in the family throughout this.
