I am a gamer. It is my hobby. I enjoy it, and I'm not ashamed to say that I do so. I regularly play D&D, even to this day.
I more than respect the men and women of our armed forces... I admire them. My father was Army Corp of Engineers, and served with honor in the Pacific theater in WW2. He fought at Iwo Jima and in the Phillipines, and after the war served six months in the reconstruction of Hiroshima. He, and others like him, have saved the world again and again.
I do not live in my mother's basement, and I never have. I've been responsible for my own upkeep for many years now. I am a successful financial professional, working for the most successful financial services company in the world. I'm not a rich man, but I'm comfortable, thank you.
I'm also a filmmaker who has achieved some level of recognition for my work. My writing has appeared in professional publications. My online work has, despite my not understanding why, a fan-base. I am also lucky enough to have many, many true and loving friends in my life, not only online, but in the real world. More than I can count. I do of course count you and Doug as two of those friends.
By the measures that are important to me, I am a successful man. And I have become one through my own efforts, and no one else's. I work hard, and I reap the benefits of doing so. I am, in a way, the poster-child for Republican self-image.
And, in that one sentence, the GOP nominee for President (or, at least, his chosen representative) has told me that he considers me to be NONE of those things. And has linked it to the (completely unrelated) fact that I am a gamer.
So, yes, I *AM* offended. On a very deep level. How DARE they impugn my character in such a way, based on such shallow criteria! I would think that a campaign to place someone into the most powerful position in the history of the world would have better things to do than to insult me and mine. Apparently, they have very different priorities than I do.
Okay, and again these things don't apply to you so why take offense? Like I said I was just curious.
Also... I know alot of gamers WHO ARE THOSE TYPES. Men/women who hide in their world of make beleive and criticize everything and everybody else.
So I say instead of getting angry at this guy whose experience is that stereotype start yelling at those who use the game as a way of escaping the world and give the "good" gamers, myself included, a bad rap.
But I realize my oppinion is not wanted nor is it appreciated so I'll shut up.

It's getting very tiresome for people to assume that gamers are social mendicants who can't lead a normal life or have meaningful opinions.
To me, such a stereotype is just as offensive as any based on racial or religious lines.
