It's a busy day around here.

So I've been reading Harlan Ellison's Shatterday. Like all writers, he's asked "where do you get your ideas?" by lots of readers, and the fun answers have caused some trouble, though it's fairly slight. He also mentions that writers are like machines sometimes (I might be getting this wrong 'cos I don't have the book in front of me). So even if it's not exact, that's what got me thinking: where DO the ideas come from? I mean sometimes it's very machinelike, but then there's an artistic element, too, that's not necessarily mechanical. So HOW does it work?

Here's what I think:




It's a work in progress, and maybe I shouldn't share it, but I want it out there to see.

It's a mechanical process that goes through artistic and emotional filters. That's how two creators can hear the same thing and launch completely different stories. There's more to come, I promise, but I wanted to get this one out.
