The Amazing Spiderman -- Review

So I just got back form seeing the new Amazing Spiderman movie, which was seriously awesome!

I saw it in IMAX 3D because I had a pass for it, but I honestly don't think it needs to be 3D to be enjoyed.

Anyhow, onto all the aspects that I liked...and there are many.  Now it should be pointed out that other then catching the occasional Spiderman cartoon growing up and the resent movies, I don't know anything about Spiderman beyond the obvious basics.  So I have no doubt that some fanboy purists will be upset by many of the things I liked.  Just something to keep in mind.  I ALSO don't know if what happened in the movie is something adapted FOR the movie or comes from something else.  Ultimates maybe?

So what did I like?  Um....all of it! No seriously, I can't find a flaw in this movie.  It's long but it doesn't FEEL long. The pacing it great and the story very engaging.

This time around we have Gwen Stacy instead of Mary-Jane as Peter's love interest.  And there is a big focus on the disappearance/death of Peter's parents.  By the looks of things they are meaning to make this mystery an underlying plot point in future movies and I have to say, I love that.

There is no days as a wrestler in this one, though there IS a lovely reference to it.  And the reason Uncle Ben is killed DOES still come down to Peter's inaction, but the situation is different.  Over all I think it's a very good modernization of the mythos.  Same with how/why Peter gets bitten by a spider (I'm pretty sure that scene gave my arachnophobic brother the CREEPS).  Oh and they reintroduced an element that was annoyingly missing in the last set of movies, the webbing is made in shooters!  Woohoo!  That was one of the few details I new about him and which made him interesting to me.

Other things I liked, I think the dialogue/banter was very faithful for the friendly neighbourhood Spiderman.  And I enjoyed how the city's mood toward Spiderman was changeable.  The cranes are an awesome scene.

Of course in the next movie New York will probably be hating Spidey again as the pendulum swings.  Oh, and the Stan Lee cameo is PRICELESS.  There is a snippet to watch for midway through the credits, so don't leave right away.

So yeah, a VERY enjoyable movie and I would certainly suggest that anyone who likes super-hero movies go and see it.
