Ann Hui's star-studded biographical drama The Golden Era has revealed its poster. It shows a plainly dressed Tang Wei looking away while standing on a white piece of paper stained by black ink. Written by Li Qiang, the biopic chronicles the life of famed Chinese writer Xiao Hong and is one of Hui's most ambitious projects yet.
Backed by a huge ensemble of talents, the film features a cast that includes Tang Wei, William Feng, Zhu Yawen, Hao Lei, Tian Yuan and Wang Qianyuan. Instead of focusing on Xiao Hong's legendary love life, Hui aims to shed light on the pursuit of freedom, dreams and stability in the unsettling era of 1930s China, with references to notable literary figures such as Lu Xun, Mao Dun and Ding Ling.
Shot in more than five cities in China including Harbin, the movie, budgeted at 70 million yuan, fulfills a four-decade dream of Hui, who has long wished to do a feature film on the storied author. Hui has said that The Golden Era sums up her beliefs and knowledge about life and the art of filmmaking. The film is set for release later this year.
