“What’s going on?” Kyuhyun asked, his brow furrowed. He had just arrived at Hyukjae’s house with Jooyeon in tow. She looked worried as well.
“She won’t tell us what’s wrong,” Heechul told them.
“We’ve asked her dozens of times,” Hyukjae added.
“Taeyeon’s in the garden,” Donghae said before Jooyeon could ask.
Jooyeon went to the garden through the dining room. The four boys watched as Jooyeon approached Taeyeon, who was seated on one of the benches. Taeyeon immediately stood up and put her hands on Jooyeon’s arms.
Suddenly, Jooyeon took a step back, her hands covering her mouth. She looked shocked and upset about something. There was a new rigidness in her form, which spelled fear. Donghae started to step out to ask what was wrong but Heechul grabbed his arm, stopping him.
“Let them talk,” Heechul calmly said, although it was obvious that he looked worried as well. “They’ll tell us when they’re ready.”

“Taeng,” Jooyeon sighed in dismay, plopping down on the bench. “What am I going to do?”
“We’ll think of something,” Taeyeon assured her, sitting down as well. She put an arm around her best friend. “Everything will be fine.”
“I really don’t know how that’s going to happen,” Jooyeon responded in a trembling voice. Closing her eyes, she took a deep breath. She should’ve made a wish when she had the chance.
“We shouldn’t panic,” Taeyeon quietly said, glancing at the house. The boys were watching them intently. “They’ll ask what’s up.”
Jooyeon sighed. “They already keep wondering as it is.” She was quiet for moment, wondering how things came to this. “I’m scared,” she whispered.
Taeyeon shook her head. “Don’t worry about them.” She sighed. “I’m sorry I couldn’t do anything. All his reasons were valid.”
“It’s not your fault,” Jooyeon assured her, holding her hand and squeezing it. “I’ll just have to manage.” She gulped quietly.
“What do you mean I?” Taeyeon glared at her. “We will manage this together.”
Jooyeon smiled appreciatively at her best friend. It was nice to know that no matter what happened there would always be one person standing by her side. She was almost sure that many people will be against her soon enough.
Taeyeon stood up. “I’m going back inside to check if Siwon’s arrived,” she told her.
“I’ll just stay out here for a while,” Jooyeon said, smiling at her.
“Okay,” Taeyeon said. She gave her best friend a quick hug and went back inside.
“Everything okay?” Donghae asked as Taeyeon walked in.
“Yeah,” Taeyeon lied, smiling. “Is Siwon here yet?”
“They’re in Hyukjae’s room,” Donghae told her. Taeyeon thanked him and then proceeded upstairs.
As he was left by himself, he turned to watch Jooyeon again. For some reason, he just couldn’t leave her alone. Things just seemed to have taken a turn this time even if she didn’t say anything. Her actions showed it. No words needed to be said. There was this nagging feeling inside of him that wanted to know what was bothering her. But he didn’t want to pry. And he didn’t want her to close up even more.
Making a quick decision, he walked over and quietly sat down beside her.
“It’s a beautiful night,” he observed, looking up at the dark sky.
Quietly releasing the breath she didn’t realize she was holding, she smiled at him. It was a relief when he didn’t ask her what was wrong this time. She didn’t think she would be able to lie anymore.
“It is,” she agreed, looking up as well. “I wish it was always like this.”
“What, the night sky or us being beside each other?” he teased, looking at her.
Instead of being embarrassed like he thought she would be, she chuckled. Looking at him, she answered, “What if I say both?”
“Really?” he asked in amazement. He really was just teasing her, wanting to see how she would react. She’d been so uptight the past days that they thought it better not to try to cross the lines she put around herself.
“Oppa, I’m sorry,” she then said, surprising him once more. “I know it’s hard being around me these days. I haven’t been myself and I… thank you for being so patient.”
“Jooyeon, I’m not just your friend when you’re easy to get along with,” he assured her.
Her smile grew wider. “That’s exactly the reason why I like you. Because you just accept me.”
“It’s not hard to like you,” he mumbled, looking down to hide his red cheeks.
“I hope that you won’t think differently in the future,” she responded sadly, looking back up at the sky.
Donghae was just starting to wonder what she meant when Jooyeon suddenly reached for his hand and pointed at something in the sky. As he looked up as well, trying to ignore the tingling feeling that her hand on his brought, she requested, “Oppa, make a wish.”
He opened his mouth to say that it was merely an airplane, but she interrupted him. “Just make a wish.” She closed her eyes.
So he followed suit and closed his eyes, a wish in his mind.
After a couple of seconds, they both opened their eyes.
“What did you wish for?” Jooyeon asked Donghae curiously, a bit surprised that he did follow her suggestion.
He gave her a shy, boyish smile. “What did you wish for?” he shot back.
“I guess we’re not going to know each other’s wishes then,” she responded, chuckling.
He chuckled back. “Hey,” he then went on, “why…?” It was a bit odd, even for him, to be wishing on airplanes.
“We should make do with what we have,” she explained with a shrug. “Shooting stars aren’t easy to come by. And even when they do, we don’t always catch them.”
Donghae watched as Jooyeon tried to hide her sad smile and watched the stars shine. He couldn’t help but think about how there were still so many things he didn’t know about her. This girl, who made it so easy for everyone to like her, but was so afraid of physical touch, was just so special. But he knew that he fully didn’t know how special she was yet. He wanted to know everything about her.
As they went on talking, Kyuhyun watched them from the window of Hyukjae’s room. He saw everything.

“Ya, where are you?” Hyukjae demanded. They were already seated on the best bleacher spaces, ready to watch Donghae play his first soccer varsity game. He looked around, wondering where their friend was.
“I’m on my way,” Jooyeon promised. She had insisted that they all go ahead without her since she wanted to do something before she went to the game.
“But you’ll be here, right? You did promise Donghae,” Hyukjae asked, sounding a bit worried. He watched as Donghae did some warm ups on the field. He really was excited to have Jooyeon watching for the first time.
“Yes, oppa, I promised and so I’ll be there,” Jooyeon confirmed. In fact, she was already near the school, already on her way to the bleachers.
“Alright, we’re on the fourth row, middle part,” he said, looking around once more.
“Thanks oppa,” she said, ending the call just as she was going up the stairs. As she stood at the top part of the bleachers, she scanned the place for the others. She was about to go there when she saw Eunhye and her friends seated right behind them. Making a quick decision, she stayed at the top part of the bleachers at the very right, where she watched Donghae stretch with his team.
Donghae was feeling a bit nervous. He had practiced well and hard all of the fundamentals and the plays they needed to execute, but still there was uneasiness in him. He supposed it was because it was his first game. Thinking about this, he realized he wanted some reassurance. The bleachers were packed. Probably every student in Neulparan was there, as well as students from the competing school. He immediately found Hyukjae, who shook his head. Disappointed, Donghae returned to his stretching and warm up.
Soon enough, the game started. Just a couple of minutes into the game, Donghae scored a goal, making the crowd go wild. Jooyeon watched as Donghae did a little celebratory dance, looking up at the crowd. She thought he saw his smile falter when he did, but it disappeared so quickly that she probably just imagined it.
As the game neared the end, the score was 2 - 1 in Neulparan’s favor. Almost all of it was thanks to Donghae. It was obvious that he had talent and the skills to go with it. It had been a while since their soccer team had a star like him. Jooyeon couldn’t help but smile like a dork. She felt so proud of Donghae. He looked so focused and so intent on winning during the whole game that he executed his moves perfectly. Her smile grew wider when she heard Hyukjae’s, Heechul’s and Kangin’s cheers above the crowd’s. There was definitely going to be a celebration after this.
The others went down to the field, all pulling Donghae into a sweaty hug. Kangin and Shindong carried him up and kept on cheering loudly. When the boys finally put him down, Donghae chuckled, “Thanks guys.”
“Man, you were so awesome,” Hyukjae agreed, demonstrating the awesome kick that he did that made them score a goal. Kyuhyun nodded in agreement.
“Really awesome,” Taeyeon seconded. “And I don’t even understand soccer.”
“You should start, you know,” Hyukjae said. “We’re going to be watching a lot of games from now on.”
“Basketball’s enough for me,” Taeyeon said, looking up and smiling at Siwon, who had his arm around her. He returned her smile and gave her a quick kiss.
“Okay that’s enough affection for today for you two,” Kangin said at once.
“What about you two?” Siwon demanded, nodding towards him and Tiffany. The two had been constantly holding hands and hugging the whole game.
Tiffany blushed. “It’s Kangin oppa’s fault.”
“It’s not my fault I can’t let go of you,” Kangin defended himself.
As the others laughed and bickered with each other, Donghae stood beside Hyukjae, who gave him a small smile.
“Sorry, Hae. She said she’d be here,” Hyukjae said, patting him on the back.
Donghae gave a ghost of a smile. “It’s alright. She probably got caught up with something.”
“Hey,” Taeyeon said, interrupting everyone. “We made a reservation at a restaurant nearby at seven. Let’s go or we’ll lose it.”
“You guys go ahead,” Donghae said. “I’ll just shower.”
“Good idea,” Shindong said with a nod. “You stink.” He chuckled and patted him on the back. “Good game.”
“Thanks,” Donghae responded, grinning.
“You sure you don’t want us to wait for you?” Hyukjae asked, looking at his best friend carefully. He really was going to have a talk with Jooyeon after this.
“Yeah,” Donghae insisted, shoving him. “Go. I’ll follow.”
Donghae stood on the field by himself. With the ball at his feet, he started to kick it around and do some drills. In truth, he really didn’t feel like going out. For some reason, something was just nagging at him. He then kicked the ball hard and it sailed perfectly right into the goal. He jogged towards the ball and picked it up.
Sighing, he started to go to the shower room, but stopped when he looked up and saw who was there.
“You’re here,” Donghae monotonously stated.
Jooyeon smiled at him, walking closer to him. “Of course I’m here.”
“You mean you watched the game?” he asked apprehensively.
“Yes, I watched you score the goals and win the game,” she confirmed, grinning widely. “Oppa, you were so amazing. I’ve never seen you play like that during basketball.”
“Well, I am better at soccer,” he responded nonchalantly, already feeling better. “So where were you sitting? Hyukjae said you didn’t come.”
“I was up there,” she shared, pointing at the top left side of the bleachers. “I had a nice view.”
Donghae smiled at her, feeling annoyed at himself for thinking that she broke her promise and didn’t come.
“You thought I was going to miss your game, weren’t you?” Jooyeon asked, breaking into his thoughts. When Donghae looked uncomfortable, she chuckled. “I understand why you would think that. I haven’t been around much, after all.” With that, she got something out of her pocket and handed it to him.
“What’s this?” Donghae asked, fingering the small blue box. He looked at her.
“Open it,” she suggested expectantly. He dropped the ball to the ground and slowly opened the box. Inside was a key holder with a silver soccer ball and an airplane as charms. “It’s weird, right? I saw this in the mall and thought why would they put a soccer ball and a plane together in a keychain? Anyway, I thought of you when I saw that.”
“You did?” he responded, looking up at her, feeling pleased. She smiled at him. “Come here,” he called.
Without waiting for Jooyeon’s reaction, Donghae took a step towards her and pulled her into a tight hug. Jooyeon hugged him back without hesitation or reservations. And for both of them, it just felt right.
