Summary: Even with everything Kensei has been through, he cannot forget those eyes.
After a hundred years, someone as inconsequential as that random boy in Rukongai should have been completely faded from his memory. Yet, he had not. Countless battles, becoming a Vizard, and a supposed traitor to Soul Society could not erase those appreciative eyes from his mind - they seemed to be permanently engraved.
Muguruma Kensei sighed in exasperation. That boy, Hisagi Shuuhei, would not refrain from tormenting his thoughts. Whenever the former captain had a moment of relaxation that damned kid would strip him of his peace. Those fucking eyes. They haunted him. Every time he allowed his mind to wander, it always lead back to Hisagi Shuuhei and his insightful, wide eyes.
But Kensei could not help himself. Thinking of those dark orbs became almost a drug to him. He felt a junkie's high whenever venturing to what laid behind the admiration - an indefinable strength he had witnessed in too few.
He remembered, fifty years ago, being driven by that subdued spirit to just observe Shuuhei's progress. He remembered being more than graciously amazed when it was revealed to him that the kid had grown into an instructor for the underclassmen at the academy. And, above all else, he remembered feeling a different sense of accomplishment when his eyes had fixed on the 69 tattoo that revealed itself on Shuuhei's cheek. Fueled by these emotions, Kensei, concealed, brought his gaze to meet with the adolescent's eyes - there had still been a flicker of uncertainty from his childhood others never noticed, and that truly bothered the Vizard. However, he quickly suppressed those thoughts; the intense passion and drive that lit up Shuuhei's expression was all Kensei needed to satisfy his craving for that hidden strength.
He thought then that the kid would no longer plague him, that he would stop thinking about Shuuhei all together. But like a true addict, that one divulgence was enough to send him over the edge. Kensei unwillingly found himself stalking through Soul Society whenever he could, always under the guise of a concealment kido. He watched from afar as Shuuhei matured into a fully capable shinigami - where did those scars come from? - and as he gained an honorable virtue along with the right to be called "fukutaichou" in the 9th Division. He was someone Kensei wanted to fight against, to respect, and to touch.
Even through all of these changes, Kensei noticed one thing forever remained the same. His eyes. Nothing took away that uncertainty Kensei could not place - almost like Shuuhei was longing for something that was completely unobtainable. Maybe, when the time called for it, he could take that away, leaving only the vigor Kensei thought so beautiful. But until then, the Vizard would only watch, loving that the shinigami was no longer a kid and loving those damn eyes of his.
