Local GOP lawmakers stand behind Bush on Iraq As a San Diego resident for over 12 years, I am deeply offended by the characterization of Democrats as unpatriotic and anti-American. I have many friends whose parents as in the military. My cousin just went over to the Middle East. I support our troops, especially given the huge military presence in this fine city. How is that anti-American? I want them to do their job in the most efficient, and safest way possible. What I don't support is President Bush's failed policies. Please, don't start saying that we can't disagree because this is a time of war. This is a flawed war. It is a war based on lies and deception.
Wars are rarely honest, and they are almost always ugly. That doesn't mean that the United States has to decieve it's citizens with it's cry of WMDs! I know we are past this now, but I think it is good to remember what the American people were fed when we first went to Iraq. I'm glad Sadaam is out. However, is the consequences worth it? Insurgency violence is at a high. At least 40,000 civilians have been killed. There have been talks of a civil war. Is this worth it? I'm not sure.
We need an exit plan. While I completely disagree with Bilbray, I applaud Hunter for giving us San Diegans a vague date for when our troops can start going home. I think Bilbray should take a cue from Hunter and start at least acknowledging the fact that his constituents are against this war (and that about half his constituents didn't vote for him in the first place).
