“In time I realised that this was the vision that foretold my final days,” Filris said sadly. Inside, she wept as Lirael clung to her, saying she couldn’t go on by herself. Outside, she was determined to give the girl the hope she needed to carry on, but inside she cried for all the loneliness Lirael had had to endure, and still would. It didn’t seem fair that Filris, who had always had the company of her Sight when she got lonely, would have to leave Lirael on her own.
Filris took one last look down at the small soapstone dog before she handed it back to Lirael. For a moment she could have sworn it winked at her, but that was obviously ridiculous. She supposed there wouldn’t be much point in having an eye test, as she wouldn’t be alive long enough to enjoy the benefits of any corrective magic.
As she left, Filris made a silent apology to whatever god dealt with love for not paying attention to Lirael more. Maybe it was possible to die of guilt, she mused, although she thought that most of the Clayr, especially that Kirrith, would be dead by now for ignoring Lirael. In any case, Filris would soon be dead, her heart no longer pumping blood through her veins, while Lirael lived on, her heart slowly breaking but never quite finishing the job. Because hearts just weren’t meant to be broken.
