The water is blessed.

All Clayr love water.  That’s a basic, simple fact, as ordinary to them as breathing.  There are certain things that define the Clayr.  Being able to See the future is the most obvious one, alongside their blonde hair and blue eyes.  They’re also dreamy and get their days mixed up, particularly yesterday and tomorrow, so they aren’t often punctual.

We need water to survive.

The Clayr all believe that water is necessary for survival.  Not physical survival, every human being needs water to survive.  Without water, the Clayr would be nothing.  Because ice focuses their Sight and without water there would be no ice.  Without ice, their visions would be small fragments, essentially nonsensical flashes of a time that may or may not occur.  And without the Sight and their knowledge and manipulation of the future, the Clayr would have nothing.  They aren’t known for being powerful Charter mages, although of course they do produce a few.  They aren’t scholars either, or farmers - without the Sight they would be utterly bored.  And Clayr don’t get bored.  Clayr have never been bored.  Clayr always drift off into a vision when they lose interest in their activity.  And Clayr who change the way they’ve been for centuries are non-existent.

------------

Lirael jumped as Nick sat down next to her on the bench by the pond.

“You Clayr do a lot of staring into water,” he commented.  “Why?”

“Because water focuses the Sight,” Lirael replied automatically.

“You don’t have the Sight,” Nick pointed out.  Lirael sighed.

“I used to try and See something in water, because that would make me a proper Clayr.  I suppose it became habit,” she said.

“Well, would you like to go for a ride, instead of staring into a pool of water that won’t show you anything?” Nick suggested.  Lirael shook her head.

“I can’t ride,” she said.  Nick rolled his eyes.

“I can teach you.  It’s not hard, you just sit on the horse, pull the reins left when you want to go left and right when you want to go right,” he said.  Lirael allowed herself to be pulled to her feet and towards the stables.

------------

Three weeks later, Lirael and Nick stopped their horses next to a small pond an hour away from Belisaere.

“I like this pond,” Nick said, sitting down on the edge.

“So do the horses,” Lirael commented, seeing their exhausted horses drink from it.  Nick turned to her suddenly.

“You and your bloody ponds!  We’re by a pond again!” he exclaimed.  Lirael laughed.

“Well, you did say I could choose where we rode to today,” she pointed out.

“But - it’s a pond!”
