The first jump succeeded.
Before I left, my application for holiday was approved, which means I'm keeping my avenues open should Mr. Stark dismiss me when I make it to California. I've been granted a fortnight holiday which should be more than enough time to approach Mr. Stark with my offer.
I decided to leave just after midnight and set my destination for Emma's flat in Boston. She is currently working for a chemical corporation in the city, so 8pm on a Thursday would be a good time to knock on her door. As I input the coordinates, I noticed my hand trembling. This would be the first long-distance jump I attempted. The probability of things going wrong was high and I tried my hardest not to think of the myriad of horrible ways this could end for me.
I decided I needed to take one last precaution, and saved an encrypted "If I Should Die" note in George's email. Then, without pausing to think about the possibilities, I pressed the GO button on the teleporter.
The loud crack and nauseated feeling was the last thing I experienced before my feet touched down. Instead of the graceful landing I had practised back home, I immediately fell to my knees and went into a dry heave. Though my brain had accepted the transfer as instantaneous, apparently my innards were violently protesting the longer distance involved. The nausea stopped after a moment of gaining my bearings and I shakily stood back up, wiping the cold sweat from my brow.
When I felt ready, I buzzed the intercom on Emma's flat. It took her a couple minutes before she answered, and I felt a little guilty as she sounded extremely tired.
"Hello, love. I'm in the neighbourhood, care to let me in?"
"Drake? What the hell? Yeah, c'mon up."
She buzzed me in, and once I stepped in her door and into her waiting hug, I realized again just how much I loved being away from home. She admonished me for not ringing her up first, but seemed genuinely pleased to have me back freeloading in her flat. We had some beer and talked long into the night. I'm planning on camping out here for a day or so as my PTD recharges... and as I remember how nice it is to live with Emma.
