A weird need for honesty. [locked to naughty_tess]

Set a few days after this.It was extremely tempting to just try and continue his life normally, and to hide once again what his new job was going to be, but as hard as he tried he simply couldn't. A part of him argued that no one needed to know anything, that they'd be better off not knowing, but the other part was just too tired at the moment of ( Read more... )

Tess had kept her promise and had not smoked another cigarette since the one pack that had broken her. Unfortunately, she had to start from scratch in the quitting department, and was once again ODing on strong coffee and chewing gum. And, she was grumpy, though not as grumpy as the first time around. At least not because of cigarettes.

The loss of Face was much worse, and each night she spent in an empty bed in her huge empty apartment seemed to slash another wound across her heart. She often had trouble sleeping, used to as she was a warm body next to her; although it was true he had often been gone for a few days for business, she'd always known he was coming back. This time he wasn't.

Lots of things irritated her, lots of small things, so it was probably good she was alone much of the time. She was able to fake it at work, of course. Naughty Tess, though obviously sharing many common traits with Tess Jacoby, was not completely the same person.

When her phone rang she felt a streak of irritation run down her spine; she was standing on the balcony of her apartment, looking out at the city, but when she saw it was Michael the annoyance passed. In fact, she was glad. Had it been an unfortunate telemarketer or someone, their ears would have been burning for the rest of the day.

"Hey," she almost sighed into the phone, unable to fake anything to him.

"Hey," he answered with a small smile, not exactly surprised by how she sounded. Ever since her last visit he kept thinking about her, worrying about how she was doing. Now that he had a chance to hear her he was starting to regret that he hadn't called her sooner, to check how she was and with a better thing to talk about than what he was going to be doing once he healed.

"I'd ask how you are, but that's probably a really stupid question. You mind having some company for a few hours?"

"Sure, that would be fine. I'm home. Where are you?"

He didn't know it, but she felt equally guilty about not calling him sooner to see how he was doing, but the truth was their last encounter, though ending well, had rattled her more than she'd realised once she'd left. Was it the fact that they'd fought, or other things? It was just too confusing to think about, so maybe she'd been subconsciously avoiding him.

"I'm in Jersey City, but I can be there in twenty minutes." As he said so he stood and got his coat, his wallet and keys already in his pocket. "I'll see you in a few."

"Well, don't speed or anything," she said with a touch of humor in her voice. "I'm not going anywhere."

That got a real smile out of him. "I know, but it really isn't that far. I just need to call a cab, since I'm not driving just yet."

Maybe he'd get a bottle of alcohol on the way there, he thought, so it could make breaking the news a little easier.

"Oh, right. But you're doing pretty well, yeah? I'm, uh, sorry I haven't asked sooner. Funny how we seem to lose contact for a little while sometimes."

"Oh, don't worry about it. I know you've had a lot on your plate lately, so...you know. It's cool. Uh, yeah, I've been doing okay. Resting, all that other junk." He got a little antsy then, not really wanting to talk about Damian's visit on the phone. "I'll tell you all my 'exciting' stories when I get there, yeah? I still need to call the cab over."

She laughed. "Okay. But they'd better not be too exciting." Ah, if only she knew she should enjoy being clueless while she could. "I'll see you in a little while. Just buzz me and I'll open the door for you."

"I'll do that. I'll see you soon." He smiled as he said so, although he was already dreading the visit. They had already had two big fights so far, and he really didn't want to add one more to it. Damn it...

Once the cab made it to the house, on the way over he had the cabbie stop at a liquor store so he could get a six-pack of beer before he made it to where Tess lived. Taking a deep breath as best as he could, trying to ignore the cold, he buzzed her so she could let him in.

A six pack? What a lightweight.

She was waiting for him outside of the elevator when the doors opened, and she smiled. "Hi. You look much better than the last time I saw you."

Originally it was going to be a bottle of vodka, but he didn't want her to think he was trying to get her drunk. Even if the purpose of the alcohol was to make the whole ordeal of telling his news a little easier.

Michael smiled as soon as he saw her, and hugged her with his free arm. "Thanks. I'm healing okay, thankfully." The cut that he had had along his jawline would probably scar once it was fully healed, but he didn't want to think about more scars just yet. Truth be told, he still wasn't exactly ready to face just how marked his body was going to be once everything was healed.

"So how are you doing, now that you quit smoking again and everything?" His tone was casual, but he couldn't help but turn to her so he could see if she was telling the truth. It was done unconsciously, after what had happened.

Uh huh.

Since Tess wasn't a mind reader, she thought he was just looking at her. "That part's crappy as ever. Well, maybe a little less difficult." She shrugged; she was chewing some gum. "As for the everything, I'm dealing."

She led him down the hall to her apartment. She still wasn't used to living in a place this big, especially alone. She didn't know if she could do it much longer, truthfully, and would probably have to get herself a smaller place soon.

Michael didn't say anything, just followed her to her apartment. He wasn't exactly surprised by the size of her apartment, mainly because he had looked at some similar ones around the area when he had been apartment hunting too, but he was a bit more worried about the fact that she was staying in this huge place by herself. Heh, when Lauren had left him he couldn't stay in a tiny apartment because he had felt alone; he really couldn't imagine how Tess was feeling by herself here. Part of him wanted to offer her the spare room in his place again, but since he didn't want to make her uncomfortable with the offer, he kept his mouth shut.

Besides, who knew if she'd even want to speak to him after the visit was over.

"I brought some beer," he said as soon as the door closed, smiling. "Didn't know if you needed anything else, but since beer is always good it seemed like the thing to bring."

...yeah. Right. Keep stalling, Michael.

"Did you? I have some in the fridge but hey, the more the better."

At that moment Lucy and Lily, the cats, came running in straight up to Michael, their noses and whiskers quivering with curiosity.

Just as he had been about to say something he noticed the cats, and his mind went blank. He didn't freak out as much as he had done once, when one of his nieces had pretty much shoved a cat right at his face while he had been sleeping, but his eyes did widen slightly. Somehow he had forgotten that she had cats, and...

...he had no idea what to do. He just stood there for a moment, almost frozen, before he turned to her with the best smile he could manage. "Lily grew a lot since last time I saw her. You got another cat?"
