I really love keeping these lists, they're so much fun to look over at the end of the year. It is really shocking how much I forget that I've actually read.

Well I'm back from the 'Wich, not sure how the job interview went but I should know by tomorrow. I'm pretty sure I won't get it since almost all the questions were customer services orientated, which I have very limited experience of, so.... Ah well its all "experience" etc, and I am at least pleased that I got the interview.

I enjoyed keeping a list of all the books I read in 2008 so I thought I'd do it for this year too :) I don't think I'll set myself a target, however, this year - I found myself getting bizzarely worried towards the end of '08 that I wouldn't make the 50 as if it REALLY REALLY mattered. Hee.

Less than a book a week, that sounds more than manageable! Hopefully not all of them will be university related... This is such a good idea as well- to be honest, I can only remember a handful of books that I read in 2007, but hopefully this will help me to be in a better position next year.

I really just don't understand what is meant by the writerly adage "show, don't tell". You see it, hear it all the time, but, at the risk of sounding very very stupid, it makes absolutely NO sense to me. Becoming Jane just stomped all over my heart. My headache hurts worse from watching it (the strain of trying not to be a girl and cry is hardgoing!). I don't even care about the 'inspired by' historical liberties. I love sappy romances. Especially sappy romances that are doomed to end in pain. Is this a worrying fact?

I may only be catching the tail end but I feel as though my traditional summer book reading stint has begun. Today I read Lionel Shriver's 'The Post- Birthday World'.

The conceit may not be original (the basic premise of the book is very Sliding Doors) but I really enjoyed its execution.

Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat?
I do indeed crack spines. I'm one of those people who takes books everywhere with me, I lay them down at the last possible moment when I have to go off and do something else: so inevitably, in the process, they get a bit battered up.

Why do Americans change the names of English books?

Like, why is Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone called the Sorcerer's Stone. Does America not know about the philosopher's stone? Why would changing it to Sorcerer make it any clearer if you did not have the original concept? And I mean, I've never read an American version of Harry Potter, ( Read more... )
