Music

When I was a teenager and really unhappy I had three big escapes from my life: books, livejournal/fandom, and music. I was passionate about my music and fervent about finding new stuff, going to gigs. I would've said my love of music was one of the defining features of my personality.

Then I got all happy and lazy and complacent, and so wrapped up in Chris, who wasn't into music more than something to just have on in the car, that I kind of fell out of love with music and stopped exploring for new things in the same way I used to. But now I've gotten back into my old habits, not least because of the amazing-ness of Spotify* I have to say. It is so good to feel passionate and enthused about music again, I feel more like myself, somehow. And I've been to some really good gigs this year, and have some great ones lined up too.

So I thought I'd share some of my favourite songs of the moment. I'm gonna do spotify and youtube links, I'm afraid, because I neither download music anymore, nor pay for it (except through spotify).

*If anyone still doesn't have spotify (who lives in sweeden/ norway/ finland/ the UK/ france/ spain) and wants an invite when I get my next set through (think that should be next week at some point!) then comment and let me know your email address and I'll send you ones as soon as they become available :) Seriously, it revolutionises your life!

Bon Iver

Not new, but new to me. Low key guitar playing singer/songwriter. Kind of reminds me of Iron and Wine, or Elliott Smith, but not really.

Skinny Love

The xx

Feel pretty stupid rec'ing these because I'm pretty sure EVERYONE and their dog has heard of them by now but I don't care. I love their album so much, it is just perfect. I can listen to it at any time of the day and be happy. If you somehow haven't heard them yet you definitely DEFINITELY need to. This may be one of the few albums that I physically buy this year.

VCR
I think we're superstars/ you say you think we are the best thing

Heart Skipped a Beat
Heart skipped a beat/ And when I caught it you were out of reach

Wild Beasts

Again these have had a fair bit of exposure and their new album has been out for a bit so maybe everyone is already at this party but for anyone who hasn't given them a listen yet, do. They can take a while to warm to (at first I was seriously unconvinced) but now I'm really into them, bonkers lyrics and all.

All The King's Men
You're a candied queen/ And let me show my darling what that means

And, now for good measure....

Everyone should listen to Laura Marling's new single, Devil's Spoke. Cannot wait for the new album to be out, she is one of my favourite favourite singers. Going to see her in Cambridge in April, wheee! Other old favourites I've been listening to ad nauseum recently also include: The White Album (why don't we doooo it in the rooooooad), Belle and Sebastian, Neko Case, Neutral Milk Hotel and Sufjan Stevens. Music! I loves it. Also, if you're looking for fun getting ready to go out music I actually think the new Hot Chip album is really good, though it may just be because I saw them at an amazing gig recently.
