I want a sewing machine

I'm asking for money for Christmas since I want a sewing machine and there's no way I'm going to be able to take on on the plane. I've heard some good things about White sewing machines, and I like the White w3100 and the White 2235. However, if any of you peoples in my lj list who sew (you know who you are! HINT HINT), what would y'all suggest ( Read more... )

I suggest going to Walmart and buying the cheapest Brother model ($100 or less, I think it's around $88 or so). This is what I sew on, even though I have more expensive machines. It works great, it doesn't break down, it doesn't require anything but oiling. I've been using one for over a year, and since I probably sew more in a week than a casual user does in a year, I'd say it's a good bet!

All the embroidery stitches are nice, but not worth the $200 difference in price. The cheap Brothers come with a few patterns to jazz things up some.

So there you havae it, my opinion. If your budget was in the upper $300 range, I'd suggest the cheap brother and a cheap serger, which you can get for around $250 if memory serves me right. It is very nice for finishing seams, especially on clothing.

Funny, I mentioned something along those lines before, but wifey wasn't hearin' it. Sort of akin to why a beginning/casual guitarist doesn't need a top of the line Fender Stratocaster. ;)

Honey, I'm not going to take your advice for a sewing machine; you don't sew. :-p

That reminds me, have you quilted on it? If so, how does it handle that?

I'd also like to find someone who's had one for more than a year. It's not that I'm discounting your advice, I do appreciate it and am considering it, I just want to be sure that this machine will last me a long time, because I really don't want to go out every four or five years and buy another one, you know?

PS: If you do get into quilting let me know...I always have large bits (1/4-1 yard) of fabric left over that's too small for me, but would work for a quilter. I used to give them to the Church Quilt Group, but they complained that some of it wasn't 'what they were looking for'. Fine, throw out what you don't want, keep what you do...I'm not sorting through it when I'm donating it!"

Arghh, some people. Anyhoo, I can cram it into a box and ship it off to you:)

I knew you'd be the first to reply!

As for the material, BRING IT ON! I'll pay for shipping! It will definitely be cheaper than buying fabric in the stores!

I also meant to say that I'm currently making a couple of quillows; one for my mother in law and my aunt in law and plan on going into quilting after Christmas. The local quilt shot is going to be giving lessons and I've already signed up for it!
