you know, of course that you are part of my inspiration here. And of course, I'm not eating right *sigh* but at least I'm aware of it and taking steps. I wish diet soda didn't taste so nasty.
I do not have, nor do I expect to be able to afford, a personal trainer, so most of the workout stuff is going to be by the seat of my pants, so to speak. I don't even know where to begin, but if I DON'T begin, I will be even more miserable than I think I am right now.

So...thanks :-) for the inspiration

Thanks for the compliment, I appreciate it. You don't need a personal trainer. Most of them are idiots who paid 50 dollars for a certificate online. My recommendations for beginners are always these three websites:
http://www.stumptuous.com
http://www.fitday.com
http://ww.menshealth.com

Yes I know the last is a men's fitness site, but there is NOTHING and I repeat NOTHING that's different about the way a man should train and the way a woman should train, and they have great recipes, workout plans, diet tips and great motivation.

If you want to covert to diet soda, start by drinking regular and putting a little diet in, then slowly increase the amount of diet in the mixture until eventually you're drinking only diet. Takes longer but it's worth it.

Or you can forgo it altogether and drink carbonated water. My favorite is Topo Crico - costs less than most sodas

Splenda stuff isn't too bad. Even I can drink it...

And where do I get one of these certificates?

As far as men and women, the only difference is what kind of look you're aiming for. Most men's programs are geared towards bigger muscles..

ALL exercises build bigger muscles. There's no such thing as "scultping" a muscle. Muscle grows or doesn't. Fat is lost or isn't. Muscle shape, and to a lesser degree muscle size, is determined by genetics. 99% of the women out there CANNOT obtain big muscles without erogenic aids.

It's one of the fitness industry's urban myths - that you can "sculpt and tone" muscles. That just can't happen.

Hmmm. I know you can't concentrate on one area and get the fat off of it, but as far as the muscle goes, different exercises seem to define different appearances.

Could be wrong, but look at a swimmer's musculature compared to, say, a sprinter's. The swimmers always seem to have smoother muscles. More constant resistance, less explosive power needed.

Well, if you trained one way, and I trained another way, we would look different because, for example, your anterior deltoid was bigger than mine, but my medial deltoid was bigger than yours. Or the underlying structure (ligaments and tendons) is bigger on one of us.

Even if we trained the exact same way, and we were both men, we would still look totally different due to the genetic shape and potential for growth of our muscles.

But muscles only change size not shape. Shape is determined at birth.

The different between those two physiques, however, is exactly WHAT muscles get big based on how they train. But given how much the salespeople always spout crap about "sculpting" this and that.

And we were both men? Damn, I had no idea you were a chick! All this time! The facial hair way back when must have thrown me off.

Well, the salesmen are trying to make money, after all. Of course they're going to lie. So what, even if they get caught? If fatass America spends it's hard earned money on gimmicky stuff so that someone can make better equipment on down the road, so be it...

...Says the guy who had McDonald's for breakfast. I remember why I don't eat there anymore now. Urgh.
