I'm so thrilled at my pure genius today that I HAD to share my cooking triumph.
So I've been spending WAY too much money on comics, manga, and various other nerdy merchandise (CURSE MY WEAK FANGIRL HEART). That and I think i'm physically addicted to getting stuff in the mail cuz whenever i pick up a package I get high. like... HHHIIIIIGGGHHH. o_____o
ANYWAY. So with a need to better control my spending, i find myself saving by groceries and going to the dining hall more often. But I REALLY wanted to cook without the surplus groceries that go moldy in the fridge before i finish using it. So where do i go grocery hunting? In the dining hall! I needed some meat/savory side for my bento (yes... i've been reading too much food related manga) so i grabbed some chicken, raw onions and mushrooms (mmm... mushrooms :3). My ego is on the fritz right now so since I'm so proud of my masterpiece i've decided to share the recipe with everyone. Maybe this is the start of a new food blog: Spice up the Dining Hall :D
Note: Most of these are approximations. I don't usually think about measurements when i cook, i just add as I go.
Saute Chicken w/ Mushrooms and Onions
Ingredients:
-About a cup of sliced onions (from salad bar)
-About a cup of mushrooms (from salad bar)
-1 slice of grilled chicken (from the grill, ideally, it should already be spiced)
-Butter (have around 1-2 tbsp)
-Choice of sauce
1) Put heat on high. When hot enough, add butter to pan (enough to coat the bottom).
2) Add onions. Saute for about 1-2 min. The thinner slices should be slightly limp, but not too brown yet.
3) Add in mushrooms when onions are halfway cooked. Saute till they begin to brown. If needed, add more butter/oil if the pan is looking dry.
4) Turn heat down to medium. Cut chicken into bite sized pieces. Toss into mushrooms and onions. Saute till onions are caramelized and mushrooms are browned and cooked.
5) Turn heat off. Stir in your favorite sauce WHEN THE PAN IS STILL HOT. I used tonkatsu sauce (a japanese equivilent to Worcestershire sause). You can use teriyaki, soy sauce, balsamic vinegar, whatever suits ur taste or what your dining hall has lying around. Add sauce/season to taste.
The final product. I swear it looks and taste better in real life than it does in the picture. I needed some veggies with the dish so i put some edamame in there. This is now sitting in my lunchbox with a container of rice for tomorrow. Now i just need to stop myself from eating this masterpiece before all i have for lunch is rice...
I'm seriously contemplating starting a food blog type thing as I find myself turning to the dining hall for ingredients more. Might be useful for college students stuck on a meal plan but want a variety every once in a while.
Okay. Thanksgiving break is over... the hell 3 weeks is coming up. Wish me and my body luck o__o
