Politics and Other Current Events

I am scrupulously *not* playing the RNC drinking game right now (where one drinks every time they say something blatantly self-contradictory like "John McCain is pro-life and thinks that America is a country where we should be able to decide our own futures" -- this is pretty much an exact quote). I am, however, seething. And amused that the people who built the RNC stage are too dumb to not have realized that the picture he's in front of make him look like he's being badly green-screened into his own convention. (ETA: I would, however, like to point out that getting the shit kicked out of you in Vietnam is not actually a sufficient qualification for being President, nor is it a particularly singular achievement. I respect Senator McCain's endurance and valor in his captivity, but I think at this point I'm losing that respect with every cynical attempt to exploit such for political point-scoring.)

In other news... gdmusumeci comes home tomorrow from a week away (meetings in many time zones), and I am claiming my girlfriendy privileges of taking up all his time this weekend to refill my snuggle stash, despite requests to the contrary.

In other other news... It's always interesting when someone runs smack into a moral absolute you didn't know you had. I was talking to someone last week, and he said "I think this is wrong, so I'm going to have someone else do it for me." I just... lost it. I tried very, very hard to get this person to understand why I think it's actually *worse* to get someone else to do your dirty work for you, but he refused to understand what I was getting at or change his viewpoint, and I just hung up in disgust. I suspect that's one friendship down the drain, but I'm slowly coming to realize that I'm also not sure I care -- that's a form of sliminess that I'd probably rather not have in my group of friends.

I've been in fairly sincere hibernation mode dealing with, well, stuff (nothing big, really, just a rather one-thing-after-another series of small irritations). (Hey, corn. WTF? Gotta love the Republicans going on and on about their dedication to the equality of all people. Even those gay ones that want to get married? Or those women who want to, I dunno, make choices about their own futures like you say everyone should get to? Yeah, thought not.)

You know what *really* irritates me about the Republicans? I would *love* to be a Republican. I really think that smaller, more efficient governments *work* better, and that entitlement programs should be viewed with suspicion and approached with a hammer every year or five to make sure they haven't put out tentacles. (Hey, they're dragging some women out of the center, I wonder if she was trying to take photos?) I think that taxes are *bad* for people. I like shooting, and NASCAR (thank you, Phil), and country music (thank you, cross-country drive with a broken radio). I think the middle of the country has some important stuff in it and some interesting things to say to us (like "hey, maybe $5 lattes aren't the be-all and end-all of American culture"). Unfortunately, I *also* think that everyone is entitled to the protections of the government in equal measure, that sometimes the free market isn't going to solve a problem in the most efficient way, and that freedom starts with personal choices and personal liberties and doesn't mean a damn thing without them. I think the church I go (or don't go) to isn't important, any more than the composition of the family in which I choose to raise my children is the business of anyone involved as long as they're getting proper care taken of them. Where is my moderate party? My "government should be as small as possible while still doing the things we think are necessary" party?

I'm just gonna have to to do it myself. If I go to law school in 2010, I should graduate in 2013. The next Presidential election is 2016, so I think that's a bit quick to try to get national name recognition, but with a well-placed Senate run or governorship, I could be in place for 2020...

And on that note, I'm going to go take out some of this excess energy in cleaning the house before gdmusumeci gets back. But if you're looking for some serious entertainment, go ask cadhla to summarize Tyra Banks' new madness for you. Truly entertaining.
