LGBTQising CERN

Sep 01, 2010 21:38

For some reason, despite having about 10,000 physicists on site CERN has no LGBTQ group, so I'm going to set one up. It seems a little daunting, as I have to get a certain amount of inertia or critical mass or $physics_metaphor before things will work properly. So any suggestions or past experiences would be much appreciated.

For now I just want to focus on social events, and will branch out to other areas later. Ideas include things like going to bars and clubs (necessary, but ugh), meals at nice places, DVD nights, Laser-quest/ice-skating/other fun active stuff, camping trips, and anything else that sounds like fun.

Based on previous experience, an active LGBTQ group can provide a great social life, so I'm hoping to build up a community that way. After that I can move on to other things like compiling all the useful information like sexual health resources, links to legal services, helplines etc etc and maybe a dating website. Political campaigning is probably not a realistic option (except for things like Amnesty International) as the people in the group will be from all over the world.

So please, I'd love any help you can give. Any tips or things that you've done yourself. Hints on what works and what doesn't work. Most importantly I need some ideas about how to get this thing off the ground in the first place. (So far my ideas are pretty much limited to getting a mailing list set up, advertising it on the CERN websites and main mailing lists, putting up posters and sorting out a website.)
