Hello everyone, thank you for coming by and today, I have a Mini-book designed for the
Tim Holtz Media Team.
As paper-crafters, we always look for ways to add texture, colour and dimension to our work. No time is as wonderful as now to be using mediums as continuing improvements on products have made it possible for effects to come straight out of a jar ! Leaving the engineering of new mediums to the experts frees us to work with our imaginations, to think creatively in design and colour ..... how cool is this ? AND, when you combine mediums with paper supplies, it becomes a whole ton of FUN !!
This mini book was made over a couple of days. I've had the Distress Paint Shaded Lilac for a while now and though I like the colour, it was one I've never worked with. In a sense this project was a challenge : to create a colour combination that worked.
Here's a list of supplies I used :
Surfaces : Paper Stash : Kraft Resist | Collage | Bazill Card stock : Kraft, White.

This book was done in 2 parts :
1) the pages inside were hand-bound and Sea Lemon has great You Tube videos on how to bind books :
HERE. I used A5 sized paper which was folded into half, resulting in each page being 4" X 6". An alternative to a bound book would be to use accordion folded book pages.
2) the cover was made separately and the bound pages adhered only to the back cover. The stitches on the signatures were left uncovered.
To begin the cover, I chose a Kraft Resist paper with a Script design. Roughly paint with Distress Paint Tumbled Glass and Antique Linen, then wipe off the paint from the resist portions of the paper with a towel.
Next I trimmed the Kraft paper to 12" x 8". You will need 2 pieces of chipboard 4 1/2" x 6 1/4" for the front and back cover, and the spine 3/4" x 6 1/4". Using a good liquid adhesive, adhere the chipboard covers and spine as in the photo below. Make sure there is a slight gap between the spine and the covers. Gently press the paper into the grooves as this will make sure your book cover can open fully open once the adhesive dries. Trim any matching paper you like and then adhere to the inside of the cover.
The next step involves sealing the outside of the cover with matte medium as this prevents the cover from getting soiled or worn from frequent handling. This cover is now ready to be embellished !
Adhere Ranger's sticky back Metal Foil sheet on to a thin cardboard, and die cut, then emboss the dragonfly.
I lightly painted the ends of the Dragonfly wings with Mustard Seed Distress Paint, dried it, and dripped alcohol inks Raisin, then Cranberry nearer the body. Once completely dry, I sanded the wing to expose the raised areas. Alcohol inks are translucent and when used on metal, creates an interesting sheer tint very different from acrylic paint.
The next step is to add colour and texture to the front cover. I love the Harlequin stencil and used it to lightly pounce Shaded Lilac Distress Paint. Dont worry too much if the paint gets under the stencil, this will happen !
** This is a great video demo by Tim on using stencils with Distress paints :
HERE Lift the stencil and work quickly while the paint is still wet. Sprinkle Silver embossing powder randomly and heat emboss.
This is how it looks. It's really hard to get an accurate photos as the colour is very subtle, but I guarantee you the effect is fabulous !
I wanted the Harlequin design to pop a little more and inked lightly with Seedless Preserves.
The photo below shows you in clearer detail the mix of paints, embossing powder and Distress ink.
The Book Plate was painted with Distress Paint Dried Marigold, and when dry, run a sanding block over it gently to wear away some of the paint. I rubbed in Glossy Accent to stop the paint from flaking off from.
Emboss Adventure and Discover with Shadow Press on white cardstock.
Swipe Shaded Lilac Distress Paint making sure it does not pool into any of the recessed parts of the words.
While the paint is wet, pick up some Silver embossing powder with your fingers and sprinkle on to the words. I like this patchy effect not completely covering the paint. Heat emboss.
For the word Adventure, I carefully lined it up on to the Styled Labels die before die cutting.
The word Discover was trimmed into a simple rectangle and the corners rounded. On the page, I adhered a dark patterned paper from the Collage collection and stencilled with the Harlequin stencil using the ink blending tool to pounce the Distress Paint.
On the inside page, I worked on layering the elements by using vellum tags and over laying the Remnants Rubs.
This is how the inside of the front cover looked. On the left, I stencilled using Black Soot Distress Paint for contrast.
This is another page I made using the embossed Adventure bracket shape layered with vellum and more stencilling with Shaded Lilac.
This book has a total of 40 pages and I will be working on more in the weeks to come. For now, I hope the pages I've shown is enough to get you started.
Have fun, just explore and find out which mediums work for you, see you soon !!
