Yes--and they'd be doing a lot more to convince him he's loved if they really knew what was going on. The Doctor has some idea, but he doesn't know what really happened. (Yet.) :)

It'll probably take a lot of show over tell before his heart really starts believing it, but fortunately he'll get that and it'll all be ok.

Yes, he will. :) This Jack is a whole lot more cautious with his heart than the other, which is saying something! But he'll learn to trust.

So he was in the Time Agency? That, of course, just creates even more questions: how did he get to Rose's time, and does anyone know where he's really from?

You had me completely fooled at the beginning, of course, but it does make total sense that this is a younger Jack - and it also explains his insecurity in Join Us.

I'd hoped it'd do the latter--I tried really hard not to do the former! I'd hoped it would be obvious early on that this was in Jack's past--quite a long way back, in fact.

It'll take Jack a while to get over his reflexive assumption that he's going to be dumped any time, but he will learn to trust. :) I promise.

(Speaking of being dumped, I'm sorry I disappeared off IM yesterday; a neighbour needed me to drive her down to the hospital, because she'd got a call: her twentysomething son had been in a car crash.)
