Have decided, since I'm going to be very poor this month and have to stay in quite a bit, to try and watch at least one scary film a night for the whole of October, like some sort of God forsaken advent calender. I will be taking suggestions from friends (facebook and here) rather than from any "best horror films ever" lists. That way I will get to see some that I've not seen before, and because my friends are quite scary too, there's a a better chance of seeing some damned good horror.
Starting with my choice for the first film. Halloween film of 2011 - Guillermo Del Toro's half project
"Don't be Afraid of the Dark" - Not seen by me before, though I've been very excited about it for ages, and it's so damned current, it's not even out yet.
I watched this on my own, in the dark and really enjoyed it. I guess it could be classified as dark fairy-tale fantasy rather than horror, and has all the right ingredients. It's moody, and Gothic, and violent, which come together nicely, in spooky old house setting, with a touch of "monsters under the bed" and "please don't turn out the light" childishness.
I'm not going to say anymore because nobody's seen it yet, but I would definitely recommend this to those who prefer evil creatures and creepy houses to that of say, dead serial killers on the loose with a vengeance kinda thing.
