I know nothing about Zanetti, why doesn't he get mentioned more? I think he's a bit beautiful?

Really, I don't think you'll find anyone who doesn't think Zanetti is perfect (even Milan fans will admit it). He's truly pure class -- been with Inter forever as captain and team dad, is about to set the record for most appearances ever in the Argie nation team (which is a story in and of itself -- he was left off their WC2006 team and just kept his head down and kept working, and now he's back and captain), runs a charity in Argentina, etc etc etc. And I agree totally, he's gorgeous, albeit in a very distant way -- I feel a bit dirty even thinking about being attracted to someone so flawless.

Ahhh. Thank you for explaining it to me. I was curious as to why he didn't seem to attract so much exuberant fannish enthusiasm as Deki, Zlatan, Figo etc. But I guess its just taken as given. I don't mean to hustle you for information, but I'd really like to know more do you know if there is an informative post somewhere?

I'll poke around and see if I can find something. In the meantime, if you can stand it, I think watching the Pazza Inter backstage video gives such a great sense of Zanetti's place in the team, and his relationships with everyone. Everything is just utter chaos until he comes in, and he organizes EVERYTHING -- figures out who sings what, coaches people through their parts, etc -- but he's also totally relaxed and having a great time, goofing around like everyone else. (In the actual video you can see the goofing, and hear him cuing everyone to come in.) Really, he's one a million, it's so hard to find that balance, you know?

Aw. That's lovely. Not OVERLY musical one could perhaps argue.

The captain's dynamic is really interesting to me, I like fic that explores it, but I also have a great deal of respect for people who are proper leaders. Its not an easy skill, or an easy thing to do I think. Its funny looking at the kids who are coming up at the moment in their early twenties and trying to pick who'll wind up being captain in...Brazil or wherever.

Every time I watch that video, I have to play it three or four times, it makes me absurdly happy. (There's an old one, too, with Canna and Oba Martins, and Bobo.)

Deki was Red Star captain at like 20 or 21; I find it hard to believe he was remotely effective -- one of those just appointed because he's the best player, not an actual leader. And Sporting have a 21-year-old captain now; he's a great footballer, but I've no idea how he is as a footballer. It's so hard to find a balance between leadership and ability, because in some teams the best leaders are old, mentor types who end up spending most of their time on the bench. People might look up to them, but sine they're not on the field (or the court), it's hard for them to lead.

Also, why is Rui Costa not Benfica's captain? How is that possible?

Its interesting the incentives clubs try and give players, like the captaincy. Like with Thierry, perhaps. But also it makes me think of Cristiano taking practically all of United's free kicks and kicking them into the wall. I suspect the fact that he gets to take them is in deference to his other talents, rather than it being the most effective thing.

I didn't realise Rui Costa wasn't captain! That's a bit mad.

The odd bits of Lampard and Terry fic I like play on discrepancy between Terry being younger and the captain.

Do you think they'll give Zlatan Sweden? I want Robin to have Holland, and Cesc to have Spain, and vaguely I want Ronaldo to have Portugal, but he's got a way to go.

Ronaldo's worn the armband for Portugal once, I agree that he deserves it, long-term. Fangirls aside, he's special, and cares desperately about that team ( ... )

Didn't Ronaldo get the Captaincy because someone died and it was their dying wish! I need to make more dying wishing involving my feelings towards the Portuguese football team. I think he's got the passion, and dedication - I don't see him as a natural leader, but maybe in a few years.

Sweden - Wikipedia say its Freddie, but Freddie is proffessionally injured at the moment, so I think it goes to the vice (maybe) who was some guy I didn't recognise.

Spain - Wiki says Iker! I know Raul isn't in the squad which is something the Spanish press moan about a lot.

Holland - Hah! I wonder if Ruud ever has captained? Most of the time he fallen out with the management - wiki says van der Saar.

I'm going to see thispersoni'dneverheardofbeforeyoustartedtalkingabouthimbutnowamratherexcitedabout on Saturday. Maybe. If I catch my flight. I MENTION THIS RATHER COMPULSIVELY.

I FORGOT YOU WERE GOING TO SEE CORINI! OH, I AM SO OVERWHELMED WITH JEALOUSY! Oh, oh, oh. My heart. He's #5 on Torino. Plus try to notice and appreciate him amidst the Rossoneri frenzy, would you? God. I have to get over there to see him before he retires. He's Zanetti-perfect, except in an in-the-trenches, short, Russian-looking sort of way. A couple of call-ups, but no caps for Italy. Played for a ton of teams, 37 years old and still just working his ass off and being tough as hell and secretly skilled. Went to Torino to be closer to his kids, who live up north (I think in Naples) with his ex-wife. Also, he cried when he left Palermo. CRIED.

(Do you think Iker's a good leader? Or is just a big name? The only keeper captain who's ever convinced me is Schmeichel.)

(And I'm not sure if that dying wish thing was actually why Ronaldo got the armband, or if that was Scolari's excuse. It was a friendly, and most of the first-team wasn't there, so he really may have been the best option.)

I'm so easily being swayed by people being enthusiastic at me. Thank goodness no one on my flist is an evil cult leader because I would very much have signed up by now. NUMBER FIVE. Got it. I shall look out for him. Must take my glasses Why isn't football like tennis with some sort of senior's league? Just a teeny tiny league of really awesome people who play once a year in a knock about competition. Obviously it can't be a league and a knockout.

I don't know about Iker. I haven't seen him play much. I'd love it if Ronaldo developed mad!captain!skillz. They should send him on a management training course. Probably there will be role play.
