COPPA: ROMA 4 - 0 TORINO
OK so we had a slow start and was mostly being bitched around by Toro, who, by the way, thrashed us 3-1 in the first leg. We needed to win by two goals to qualify for the next round, and with halftime rolling in with neither teams scoring, things were looking bleak for my boys. My brain was literally in a labyrinth of headlines-- "Goodbye, Coppa", "Title holders out of race", "Roma raped by Toro AGAIN". I was emo personified.
The second half beginning and out of fingernails to masticate, I find out Giuly is fielded for Taddei. Hesitations abound-- the man is just recovering from a flu! Lo and behold things take a 180-degree pivot, and Mancini finally scores to give the homeboys the lead. Celebrating would be premature at this point, however.
We needed another goal, and so Spal had Il Capitano taking over as lone striker while Mirko walked to the bench, booed. True enough, Checco scored within TWO MINUTES of Manci's goal to put Roma through! It was an historical moment as Totti scored his 200th goal in the Roma maglia at home. The fans described the experience as "explosive."
This being Roma (read: team whose crap finishing will teach you patience), I was overflowing with contentment as it is. But some aggro shirt-tugging on Philou sent Checco to the penalty spot, which Fra easily converted, putting Roma ahead 3-0. But, it didn't end there. Giuly-- yes, influenza-stricken freaking Ludovic Giuly-- scored a fourth goal that kicked the celebratory stripping into high gear; hence this:
Beginning with the enemies, since they controlled the first half.
Hmm, DDM. I mean, Di Michele came close to scoring but was once again denied. Remember the last match? He had like 5,000 chances?
Fact: DDM is Romano-- born and raised in the Eternal City. He is also a not-so-closeted Romanista.
But let's not blame his bitchiness on that one slight detail.
Toro were looking really dangerous. Recoba, in particular.
Even if DDR and Philou were double-marking him
Their defense was pretty solid, too, if not a little rough. Hmph.
