OMG,
LTUE!
I got to hang out with really cool people! I got to have the first five pages of the GargoyleFic workshopped by a published author--who said nice things about it! I got to attend panels that showed me how to capture my "zing" and come up with the next great idea...and I have the first few paragraphs of that next great idea. I admitted to people that I wrote fanfiction, and they didn't run shrieking in the other direction or look down their noses at me! (Although they may have just been politely keeping their thoughts to themselves.)
Some utterly awesome people I got to talk to (with shiny linkage):
- kenrand, who is a lovely man who's had a fascinating life. I hope I get to see more of him. He's written a series of sci-fi westerns that are brilliant, among other things.
- howardtayler, author and artist of Schlock Mercenary, a marvelous webcomic that everyone should be reading. His wife is lovely as well.
- Dave Wolverton, who has edited and judged Writers of the Future and written tons of neat stuff.
- Brandon Sanderson, whose first line in Elantris is "Prince Raoden of Arelon awoke early that morning, completely unaware that he had been damned for all eternity." He was the one who workshopped the GargoyleFic.
- Julie Czerneda, author, editor, and biologist, who is the nicest person you'll ever meet.
- Bob Defendi, writer of RPGs and short stories, past winner of Writers of the Future, and possessed of a wonderful booming laugh.
- Stacy Whitman, editor at Mirrorstone Books, who allowed me to pick her brain briefly and was very nice about it.
- John Brown, published short story author who inspired my next story. *dances him* Woe, I have no linkage, but he's a Utah native who was a first place winner of Writers of the Future and is published in Volume 13 under the name "Bo Griffin."
- snarking_boojum, my Writing Buddy, whom I missed seeing last week due to being in Arizona. *hugs him*
I also learned a bunch of technical stuff about writing stories and query letters and the market. I have lots of links to follow up on. I'm inspired and recharged, although the next thing is going to be Crack!Fic in the extreme with (probably) no market. Do I care? Nope, gonna write it. I'm going to do the rewrite of the GargoyleFic today, or at least start on it.
I am so never going to catch up with LJ, at least not the comms.
