I went to Upper Chesapeake on Saturday for a Prenatal Breast Feeding class. The other women there were further along than I am. I am noticing a trend were most of the prenatal stuff and birthing classes and such are scheduled for the 6 weeks before your EDD. That doesn't work so well with my compulsive need to be prepared. What if I go into labor early? Anyway, I came out of the class with a lot of great info and a case of stomach envy. Those women were HUGE. I was thinking that they were further along than I am so I went home and got online to se if I could see some pictures of prego women in cyberspace and it further enforced what I thought. I am a lot smaller in comparison. For the most part, I feel like I have just gotten really thick in the middle. I don't think I look pregnant per se. Except for the boobs. The boobs are tremendous. That is a plus I think. Some friends were saying I should be glad that I haven't ballooned out and to consider that maybe I will pop out in another month or so. Maybe the baby is just petite? We'll see...
The class itself was great. It was taught by one of the three lactation consultants at the hospital. I think I got really lucky in planning to birth there. They are extremely pro breast-feeding. She was saying that they are in the postpartum room within an hour of normal deliveries to help the baby latch correctly. They also have bi-weekly support groups in case you run into problems. She presented a lot of info that I hadn't heard before, gave pump recommendations, and contact info for pump places. Another really interesting thing, considering this is my first baby, she presented a series of photos that explain what to look for in dirty diapers of breast fed babies. Apparently lots of people misinterpret breast fed baby poop as diarrhea and think there is a problem when there isn't. Maybe that's a bit gross, but I thought it was cool. It was something I wouldn't have thought of. They have a series of other prenatal classes. I think I will check them out after the semester is over.
