In all honesty I don't know how to start this entry. So beware (you have been warned...I will ramble). Yesterday I was at a party, or more specifically a 15, and to my surprise I saw one of my high school "colleagues", if you can call him that. Since the party was terribly boring, the mariachis had left, and really bad Mexican regional music was playing, I decided to catch up on things with my old high school buddy. I could tell by the stench in his mouth that he had been drinking, but nevertheless he seemed like he could still think and breathe at the same time, so I didn't mind much. Before I reveal our conversation, first I have to point out that this guy was not a top student. If anything, people looked down on him sometimes, including teachers. Basically everybody shared the notion that he was going to be a failure in life, much like everybody else that graduated from my high school. I don't want to sound like the heroine of this story, but I am (smiles eagerly). In high school we had a class titled Virtual Business in which we acted like a real business. I was the CEO, and he was a regular worker. I talked to him occasionally in class, and grew respect for him. I actually thought he was a very nice gentlemen with a great aspiration to be someone in life.
And I wasn't wrong. He told me he is now working for a company that pays him extremely well. They are offering him a bunch of benefits, and are even paying for his schooling. He owns a bunch of big ol' gas guzzling trucks, and lives on his own.
At that moment I felt sooo much envy. Like a lot. I really could not believe he was doing so well. I mean there I was, valedictorian of my class, unemployed, going to community college and having to pay all my schooling because I can't get financial aid. And he...he barely had made enough credits to graduate!!
After giving him the evil eye, I asked him how it felt to live on his own. It was very sad to hear what he had to say next. He revealed to me that in order to get by after high school, he was forced to sell drugs to help his family, who at the time had heavy financial burdens. Once his parents found out, they decided to disown him. They kicked him into the street without any of his belongings. He had to sleep in parks at night, and the little drugs he had left, he utilized in order to suppress his hunger and not starve. After the billionth day of being homeless, he decided to walk into some random company and asked for a job. Of course, the people at the company thought he was insane and told him to get out. He refused to do so, in fact he challenged them. He told them to throw a disassembled computer at him (not literally though) and that he would assemble it in ten minutes. He did and ta-da! he is now one of the most important executives. He even went to New York to close some important deals last week.
The downside though, is that he had to go through all this incredibly tough and messed up things in order to be in the position he is now. In a few months he will also be the father of a child.
This is the strangest part. I don't know if it was the alcohol speaking or not, but he told me that he has a very big crush on me back in the days. I just smiled and shrugged like a dumb ditz not knowing what to say.
Life takes some craaaazy turns.
