I also like the scene on Noquivzor between Wedge and Leia early on. It's very revealing about their relationship. When Leia surprises him, Wedge's default reaction is to address her as Highness. He relaxes when she tells him not to be so formal, but at this stage in the relationship, he still sees her primarily in in her political/leadership role.

Once he does relax, the conversation becomes quite personal. Wedge is relating to her as 'Leia', not as 'Senator Organa'. He reassures her that he is not bothered about not having found anyone to love, and changes the subject by asking about her and Han. She confides in him about her feelings for Han and Wedge offers his support, before asking about Luke. Leia's sense of friendship towards Wedge is made quite clear by her farewell kiss on his cheek.

They first talk about the Provisional Council meeting that's going on. Wedge is still politically inexperienced at this point. Leia explains to him the subtle manouvering that's been going on by Fey'lya, and Ackbar's responses. In later books, Wedge is more politically astute but it's interesting to see him here as a lowly squadron commander who's quietly excited at being the same room as the Provisional Council.

The first seven X-wing novels can be seen as the period where Wedge learns to think like a politician, as well as a general. If Wedge had been ambitious for personal power, then his skills as politician and soldier, and his connections could have eventually brought him to high political office. Wedge doesn't want power for himself though, but he does benefit from knowing how to prevent politicians from abusing their power over others, especially himself and his soldiers.
