Opening ceremonies

Normal folk may not know this, but geeks have this secret little tradition they perform when they get a new gadget or device. They call it Unpacking or Unboxing, or the plain and literal Opening Ceremony. It's documenting the steps taken when they unpack the device. They take pictures, or even video the "ceremony". Sick, yes?

No, of course not. To geeks, this is cool, especially when you're one of the first to get the device, and other geeks wanting one can vicariously experience the thrill of opening up the thing.

I think it hails from the Christmas morning tradition when you open your gifts, or during your birthdays as a child. I love it myself; I savor the slow reveal, the ripping off of the packaging, and opening up the box and finding out what's inside.

Some manufacturers deliberately make this opening ceremony a real experience by taking special care with their packaging - I can name Apple as one of them, at least back in the early days of the first iPods, something I've written about previously. Go through the net, and you'll find many instances where geeks post up pics of their unpacking, most recently for PS3s and Nintendo Wiis.

Me I finally opened up my new iPod shuffle (yes, another one - thanks Dada!), and dutifully documented the opening ceremonies. You can see the slideshow on my Parazz album, if you've a mind to. Coolness.

And if you think this is all silly, then you're obviously not a geek. We live for this stuff.
