I'm feeling somewhat better since the last post. I went to my chiropractor, whom I really enjoy talking to and my back is feeling more limber. I would call him one of my favorite people, if I didn't have to pay to see him. It just puts a whole new dimension on a person-to-person relationship when you're paying the other one for their services. (Ask Spitzer about that one!) He enjoys our conversations because who else can you talk to about Hittites? He's one of those people that gets it: really gets the whole art of conversation. You can slip in a double entendre or hope that he'll get the reference, and he does. It's just so ENJOYABLE talking to people like that. That type of conversation is more of a game, and it's what I enjoyed about going to South Carolina: winning the conversation game earned me money! And I won twice: case simulation ($25) and scholarship-wise ($$$!!!$$!$!!).
Of course, that type of conversation doesn't define the deeper relationships we have with people. Usually, that is the playful type that sometimes comes out in social situations. You don't want to get too deep into politics or philosophy, you want to enjoy yourselves! If the atmosphere is condusive, you find yourself having more serious conversations or discussions. Wednesday night choir went from playful to serious when we discussed a problem concerning one of the members and how best to remedy it. We gave it some serious thought, even to the wording of the resulting e-mail. The levity did not resume after this discussion, but then again it was also after 9pm.
I think the point is that I enjoy verbally sparring, but that doesn't nullify my pleasure in having deeper conversations where thoughts can be exchanged freely. Apples to oranges (but hey, they're both fruits?).
