I'm going to South Carolina this week! Weeee! Now you may ask yourself why anybody would be super-excited to go to South Carolina, but it's a trip! Since I've been dating Aaron (2001), I haven't been outside of the following zone:
Las Vegas on the East
Puerto Nuevo on the South
Washington state (southernmost part) on the North
and the Pacific on the West.
How claustrophobic! You may say that this area is certainly wonderful and I shouldn't scoff at living in such a lovely prime piece of the world as California, but reflect, please, that prior to the 2001 Miriam-Aaron connection, I regularly travelled. I've been to a dozen countries and nearly half of the states. To then be limited to four states and about an hour's worth of Mexican coast for six years is stifling.
The single life has its advantages: meeting new people, having no restrictions or obligations, going wherever whenever, and most importantly: TRAVELLING. You don't have to coordinate schedules and double the price of plane tickets. You are a free agent. I wouldn't give up Aaron or the blissful togetherness for these single-perks, but being half of a couple has cramped my travel-style.
Aaron and I still haven't been on our actual honeymoon: three weeks in Turkey. With the current Turkish-Armenian-American kerfuffle, it may have to be altered (BUT NOT POSTPONED)! Why Turkey? We want to go someplace beautiful, relatively inexpensive, and I want it to be new for the two of us which rules out much of Western Europe for me. The cost for that trip is remarkably not that expensive, considering that the San Diego - Istanbul route is not the most popular.
I am getting ahead of myself: South Carolina! I'm interested in a business school there: the number 1 rated International MBA program in the US. After looking at the city's website, it doesn't seems as though the "scene" (can we even call it that?) is nearly as vibrant or varied as San Diego, but I think we can survive! I'm going for a two-day event where you shadow current students and experience the classes first-hand whilst hob-nobbing with professors and admissions staff. I feel as though I need to put forth a decent amount of prep for that, but I am caught up in the excitement of going somewhere new.
I'll be taking a red-eye from San Diego to Atlanta, and then the Charlotte, North Carolina. It's much cheaper than going to Columbia directly. Then I'll rent a car and drive down to the campus. I need to book a motel still, but everything else is set. Someone reminded me that I am luckily 25 or else wouldn't be able to rent a car most places. That is still such a shocker. I've been independent for so long and have felt no restrictions placed on me because of age for the last four years-to think that I would have been excluded from driving a rental just a few months ago is ludicrous. LUDA!
My only reservations (as in, hesitations) about this trip come from the price as well as the time off work. As stated above, I haven't gone on my honeymoon yet and I'm hoarding my vacation time. As it is, I may still have to take a couple days unpaid. Well, I'll face that when it comes to it.
