the most names of any dog ever

Nands, aka, Nanda, aka Ananda, has taught me that an animal's name should not so much be a word as a sound. there must be many permutations of the sound, so that you can speak to the dog in different tones of voice. my mother calls nanda "Ananda Marie" when she is very upset with her ( Read more... )

Nice, molly. If you are still taking votes, second your motion for Evie/Eav/Eavan/Aoibheann. Simple, appropriate, and abbreviatable.

Yaya reminds me of somebody's grandma.

Yaya reminds me of somebody's grandma.

i couldn't put my finger on it at first, but i think you've nailed it on the head on why that name didn't sit well with me, stace. it reminds me too much of that lady from fairytales and scary stores, the one who rides around in a flying mortar and pestle with a house that walks around the forest on chicken legs. what's her name? baba yaga or something like that? or am i mixing things and confusng her with the lady who has a pot that makes lots of speghetti. ames would know. dammit.

although visually i think it looks a bit silly, i'm agreeing with stace on her choice and going with Aoibheann.

i thought you originally wanted a gerund, though, moll. or is that only for cats?

I think I remembered why yaya reminds me of grandma this morning as I was brushing my teeth. isn't yaya greek for grandmother? Who read Middlesex?

But it also has the fariytale, old hag in the woods kind of connotation that you describe, Ella. nicely put.

my cat will be a gerund. good memory! you get a check-plus

i accidentally told one of my kids "ten points!" and they said, "really? for what?"

diddy reminds me, not of p diddy, but of 83-year-old diddy with the star tattoos and the clark gable watch.

Oh Molly, I forgot, another good Irish name: Boadicea. Pronounced "boh-dih-CHEE-ah." She was a Celtic warrior queen. Enya wrote a song about her. Which the Fugees later sampled. Damn cool.

i don't like Eaaobgheirearan or whatever. too complicated for a mutt. i would name a Siamese cat that. plus, my brain is wired to hear Evie as a male name, since Reno Sweeney in Anything Goes (ie., me in 11th grade) had to kiss and dance with a character named Evie. and our Evie, a bepimpled super-senior, was rather repugnant.
and yet, knock yourself out, Moll. i will continue to call her Yaya no matter what. and i think you like that name, so go for it!!!!!!!!!!! when do i get a play date with Yaya?

yia-yia is indeed greek for grandmother, and it's pronounced yaya.

but molly's dog is five years old and was on the streets for at least part of it's life, so it probably IS a grandmother. and i like Yaya. she's going to be america's next top model.

what do you mean, a gerund? like "peeing"? "licking"? "purring"?

my cat, when i get one, will be named cleo or spike. i like to choose names beforehand and assign them to animals regardless of whether they fit or not.

which one were you partial to, moll?

wagging? walking?

swaying?

something like that.

molly showed me once a nyt article about some brilliant genius guy and his gerund-ed cat.

back in nutley, the people across the street had a little tiny yappy black poodle (ew). it's name was spike. now they have this huge large eat-your-face-off doggie (a beautiful one at that, i must say). this doggie is named lady.

i always thought those name choices were a bit funny-strange.
