Sony MDR-SA5000

A quick updater before I hopefully add a better one tonight or at least add onto this...

School is ok, job is ok.. bought new headphones though. You can chart the evolution of sound in my life by the headphones I used.. I remember how proud I was when I saved up allowence to buy my first pair of $30 headphones at like 14-15. I thought they were the shizit. I experimented a lot with various other headphones of similar pricepoint, eventually landing on a pair of Sonys for $50. Those blew the JVCs I'd started with out of the water. After hearing about them from Matt and Nate, I jumped on the bandwagon and bought the DJ700's (Sony) a ways later for $150 which at the time I was extremely proud of. I figured bragging that I owned professional DJ headphones was pretty kickass for a 17 year old. The problem with them was that they were not comfortable enough. My ears and head hurt (I have a slightly egg-shaped head :) so certain bands are uncomfortable). I eventually simultaneously (or close to) got Terri new phones for a holiday and myself the same ones, the MDR-CD2000s (Sony again). They blew me away. Of course these were $350 this time, but I got them for half that online. Very comfortable, but I never liked the fact that the cloth screen over the speaker made the phone side on your ear and not around it. It also dampened the sound a bit more than I wanted. I lived with it for years. Now, I have made another purchase after a week straight of researching, reading reviews, checking prices, and comparing features. I almost bought the highest end Sennheisers on the market, but after a chat with Nate about impedence and junk I decided that the highest Sonys available were more for someone like me. The problem was, these headphones retailed for $699. I knew that to make it worth replacing my other already awesome ones I'd need to spare no expense, so I did not look for long at the kid bro to these. I found them for about $350 online and did it up. Notice before I go further that I continue to buy SOny products. Many people have a lot of opinions, many of which I agree with. Sony is, to a degree, an advertising whore who likes to dupe consumers. However, that's with the cheap stuff that if you knew better you'd stay away from in any brand. I have found that if you're willing to spend the cash Sony can compete or outperform many other brands like JVC etc. of the medium arena. When you enter the $200+ range, many of what Sony has to offer is not worth the money, but if you are careful in reading reviews and opinions to note which models are a stay away from thing, you can find a much more accessable-for-the-common-man version of the more "professional" and often more expensive other brands. I don't doubt the Sennheisers I looked at are fantastic, as are most other super brands most people have never heard of. However, everything negative I read in reviews about my old SOnys are corrected with this pair. A very flat, accurate response as low as 6hz and as high as 115,000. Seems unnecessary, but I read the manual that came with them and learned they were intended for Super Audio CD listening, a medium much higher fidelity than a regular CD and capable of reaching 100,000hz, so the headphones were built to output everything the medium could deliver. EVen if that range is still unnecessary, the parts that matter are fantastic especially after a 7-12 hour break-in period. They are very light and surprisingly comfortable, and I guess they better be for what I paid. The true thing I needed in my newfound lifestyle of go-go-go and not seeing a real sit-still stereo often. EVen out of the headphone jack of my laptop they sound great, though on an amp wired to a DVD player they astounded me. I do agree with the one review I read of them which basically said they are so sensative and detailed that if there is any flaw in the recording you're listening to they'll throw it back in your face. :-)

Ripping MP3s at 320 straight bitrate has never been more important. Until I write more... for now I must goto work.
