How Deep Does The Rabbit Hole Go? aethyrflux November 12 2003, 10:48:38 UTC
in the role of Tiresias, Neo's acts certainly foreshadow everyone's destiny, and his blindness is definitely a parable about how blindness to the illusionary nature of the profane world allows him to see the 'truth' of the sacred realm.

q.v. the double poster for another perspective:

` ` About Neo's blindness... In the first movie he can see while in the Matrix, but when he leaves the Matrix into Zion, his eyes won't open initially because they hurt. Morpheus says, "because you've never used them." Morpheus suggests that while in the Matrix, Neo has been blind. Later, in Revolutions, he is blinded in the world of Zion, but can still see in the Matrix. ' '

and i admit that i may be projecting the tarot system onto the film... 'cause any movie with a decent plot can be perceived through the tarot model.

but it's hard for me to ignore a few archetypal connections:

0 - The 'Kid,' as the Pure Fool, who helps avert assassination attempt, w/out even knowing it

I - Neo as Magus, able to destroy sentinels through sheer force of will

II - Oracle as High Priestess, exhibiting powers of prophesy

III - Trinity, as Empress, nurturing Neo

IV - Morpheus, as Emperor, figure of authority

V - Architect, as Hierophant, in control of the Matrix

VI - Humanity & Machine, as the Lovers, at peace

VII - Niobe Piloting the Logos, as the Chariot

VIII - Blind Neo, as Adjustment, balancing the equation

IX - Councilor Hamman, as Hermit, wisdom/illumination

X - Sentinels, as Fortune, drilling towards Zion

XI - Persephone, as Lust, kissing Neo

XII - Neo @ the End, as Hanged Man, who sacrificed himself

XIII - Neo Resurrected, as Death, metamorphosizing/evolving after Agent Smith kills him in the first Matrix film

XIV - Agent Smith & Mr. Anderson, as Art, 2=0

XV - Merovingian, as Devil, in the Underworld

XVI - Zion , as Tower, @ War

XVII - Neo Awakens, as Star, he takes the red pill

XVIII - Neo in Machine City, as Moon, traveling through the Dark Night of the Soul

XIX - Persephone/Trinity/Sati, as the Sun, for Trinity above Machine City & Sati making the Sun rise in the Matrix for Neo

XX - Sati, as Aeon, Crowned and Conquering Child

XXI - the Source, as Universe, from which comes all and to which it returns

Well, just as a demonstration of how much those attributions are your own creative effort, I ignored them for a few minutes in order to construct my own "Matrix Trumps." You'll note we don't have many assignments in common.

0 - Neo/Smith as voided conjunctio
I - Architect as Enslaving Demiurge (Mayan the Magician)
II - Oracle as Sophia
III - Persephone
IV - Merovingian
V - Morpheus as Neo's Psychopomp and Prophet of Zion
VI - Link & Zee
VII - Commander Lock as military executive
VIII - Councillor Grace
IX - The Keymaker
X - The Dock of Zion
XI - Niobe piloting
XII - The audience, suspended after each cliffhanger
XIII - Trainman as passage between worlds
XIV - Seraph as Temperance
XV - An Agent (not the hyper-Smith) as material domination
XVI - Building where Neo accesses the Source in Reloaded
(House of God, exploding tower)
XVII - Trinity as hope and inspiration
XVIII - The Matrix, as world of illusion
XIX - The Machine city in Neo's clairvoyant view
XX - Neo's "resurrection" after taking the Red Pill
XXI - The code-view of the Matrix, visible in opening credit sequences

I continued to follow Neo's diet with interest in the third movie. He turned down the red candy from the Oracle.

To make that pictorial, that should actually not be the Matrix ("You can't see it." d'oh!), but rather the Woman in the Red Dress from the training sequence in the first movie.

but hey, this is fun...
i wonder if we could get a liscensed version together?

do you at least concur with the idea of persephone/trinity/sati as aspects of the same archetype?

I would tend to agree that Persephone and Trinity are different iterations of the same principle. I'm not so sure that Sati fits the pattern. Mostly, what I get from Sati is the complementary reversal of Neo's liberation out of the Matrix in the first movie; Sati is liberated into the Matrix. And she does it with all due regard to the Lewis Carroll symbolic canon. She even has Dinah and the Looking Glass.
