Helix

SyFy has a new show called Helix. It's set down in Antarctica in a private company's research base. They're working with diseases and viruses and stuff and something happens and they have to call in the CDC to come help contain the mess and save those not yet infected.

All that sounded pretty neat to me so I wanted to watch it.

The lead character, Dr. Alan Farragut is played by Billy Campbell and his voice is constantly scratchy to the point I kept needing to clear my own throat. He takes his current assistant, who he either is or wants to screw, down to the research base with him. He was called in because his brother (Peter) has been working there and specifically asked for Dr. Julia Walker, who just so happens to be Alan's ex. Ex because he caught Julia and Peter fucking. Despite that happy past, she specifically feels that Alan should be down there working the case. On the way down the only other woman on the team, Dr. Doreen Boyle a non-skinny no-nonsense woman, needles the assistant, Sarah, about Alan and Julia. Doreen, of course, is only slated to be in three episodes and tonight was two of them.

All of that pissed me off, but I hoped that they'd move past it and give me a fun creepy story. Sadly that was not to be. The premier was a 90 minutes long and it seemed like 4 hours. The pacing was shit. Every once in a while tension would begin to build and then it would dissipate almost immediately.

Things that should have been creepy/spooky were just gross and disappointing. The characters were all petty and shallowly drawn. The dialog was not memorable except when it felt like they were trying too hard to be witty.

The sets were beautiful though. Really lovely look to the whole place. But the show itself seems hell bent on focusing on gore, violence to animals and harming women. So...no.
