OPENING WORDS OF THE OFFICIANT
Dearly beloved: We have come together in the presence of God to witness and bless the joining together of Erin Rose Doyne and Patrick Ross McNeill in Holy Matrimony. Holy Scripture commends it to be honored among all people.
The union of husband and wife in heart, body, and mind is intended for their mutual joy; for the help and comfort given one another in prosperity and adversity; Therefore marriage is not to be entered into unadvisedly or lightly, but reverently, deliberately, and solemnly. In the years Erin and Patrick have been together, their love and understanding of each other has grown and matured, and now they have decided to live their lives together as husband and wife.
THE GIVING IN MARRIAGE (optional)
"Who represents the family in blessing this union?"
My mom and dad stood and said: We do.
AN OPENING Reading, read by my Aunt Mary, who was really nervous, but read beautifully!
1 Corinthians 12:31-13:13 (New King James Version)
Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.
Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away.
When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things. For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known.
And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
DEFINITION OF MARRIAGE / HOMILY
Here the Ron gave a homily about marriage, including a telling of the first marriage, between Adam and Eve.
WEDDING VOWS
Ron: "Do you Patrick take Erin as your lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and cherish until death do you part?"
Patrick: "I do. I promise to be true to you in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health. I will love and honor you all the days of my life.
Entreat me not to leave you, or to return from following after you, For where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people, and your God will be my God. And where you die, I will die and there I will be buried. May the Lord do with me and more if anything but death parts you from me."
Ron: "Do you Erin take Patrick as your lawfully wedded husband, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and cherish until death do you part?"
Erin (I cried. This made every other woman in the whole chapel cry too): "I do. I promise to be true to you in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health. I will love and honor you all the days of my life.
Entreat me not to leave you, or to return from following after you, for where you go I will go, and where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people, and your God will be my God. And where you die, I will die and there I will be buried. May the Lord do with me and more if anything but death parts you from me."
EXCHANGE OF RINGS (We repeated after Ron)
Patrick: This ring I give to you as a token of my love and devotion to you. I pledge to you all that I am and all that I will ever be as your husband. With this ring, I marry you and join my life to yours.
Erin: This ring I give to you as a token of my love and devotion to you. I pledge to you all that I am and all that I will ever be as your wife. With this ring, I marry you and join my life to yours.
SECOND READING Read by Patrick's Aunt Ann, who also picked it out.
Tobit 8:5b-8
Tobias said:
We praise thee, O God of our fathers,
We praise thy name for ever and ever.
Let the heavens and all thy creation praise thee for ever.
Thou madest Adam, and Eve his wife
To be his helper and support;
And those two were the parents of the human race.
This was thy word: ‘It is not good for the man to be alone;
Let us make him a helper like him.’
I now take this my beloved to wife,
Not out of lust
but in true marriage.
Grant that she and I may find mercy
and grow old together.
Sharing of peace
All guests exchange signs of peace with their neighbors (shake hands, exchange hugs or kisses)
This was wonderful. Everyone got a chance to kiss and hug and kind of relax after all the emotion of the vows and ring exchange.
CLOSING Prayer
Ron's Closing Prayer
DECLARATION OF MARRIAGE
Ron: "By the power vested in me by the State of Virginia, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may now kiss the bride."
INTRODUCTION OF NEWLYWEDS
Ron: "I present to you Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Ross McNeill" The guests stand and applaud, as the couple then lead the recessional out.
In reality, the guests broke out in applause when we turned around, before he even introduced us. Then they applauded again when he introduced us.
That's the best I can do tonight! It is off to Aruba at 4:30 a.m.tomorrow! :)
