Morning:
My parents wake me up in the bathroom next to my bedroom, although it's almost time for me to get up anyway and I use it as extra dozey-snooze time. Our bathroom upstairs is almost entirely ripped out - it's getting remodeled starting Wednesday. Very excited! Half an hour from rolling out of bed to getting in the car, 15 minute drive to work.
It's Monday, which means I'm dragging, but it's the Monday of our Fall Faculty Conference week (we start classes next Monday), which means I can't afford to. I'm giving two presentations this week, one small, one larger, and there are a number of smaller details to be mopped up because I like to have our first year orientation, which starts in mid September, ready to go before school starts.
It takes 15 minutes for my computer to boot up to usable. No lie, I timed it. It drives me nuts, so I downloaded start-up delayer, put my email and firefox on startup, spaced out, and plan every Monday to use my first 15 minutes watering plants, filling my water bottle, and straightening the reference room. Then I don't turn it off again until Friday.
I bleerily browse my usual internet haunts in a quick catch-up, then thumb through academic and library blogs and newsfeeds, both to keep up on the news and look for items of interest to showcase in upcoming library newsletters. I eat a granola bar at like 9:00.
I look at my to-do list for the day (I keep one in Thunderbird's Lightning add-on calendar, which is fantastic, because I can schedule tasks for months down the road. I regularly use this to keep on top of things and remind me of when to send out marketing items, etc). Today it reads:
- FYS survey
- FYS comics
- Faculty email
- Fall Faculty Conference Slides
- Big Sign for New Faculty
Probably I will only get two or maybe three of these done today, but I'll start on the others. I'm feeling unmotivated re: the comics which is dumb and annoying because they're fun. I decide that the
Big Sign is the mostly easily doable in the morning and spend some time elbow-greasing the sign, which has had a message about final due dates on it since May. This is a sign you use with paint pens, and the paint only comes off with Windex (and it has to be Windex, no crappy store brands). The paint comes off easily-- but apparently if you leave the paint on it for three months, it leaves a stain behind.
Ooops. Well. I'll use the other side and uh. Keep that in mind for the future. It seems like writing on this sign would be fast and easy, but it's not, because I am a perfectionist and I refuse to put a sloppy looking sign outside. But it now says that we welcome the new faculty, so that's that done!
Sending the faculty email is easy, too - I wrote the entire semester's worth a couple of weeks ago. I give it a last proof, then send it off. THE SEMESTER HAS BEGUN.
My mailbox has presents! New books for our popular reading collection, way my favorite part of my job. Today:
* The Sonderberg Case, by Elie Wiesel
* In a Heartbeat: Sharing the Power of Cheerful Giving, by Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy (the 'The Blind Side' people).
Not that exciting, but I always like new books. They get opened, tagged so you can't steal them (in theory), added to my September newsletter, and shelved. Hooray! The envelopes are recycled - we reuse EVERY ENVELOPE EVER in these parts. They go into ILL until they're falling apart, and then they might go into P-CIRC, where they wrap books for transport in bags and trucks to other Ohio libraries through OhioLINK. An envelope has to be srsly poor shape to go into the trash. We hardly ever have to buy them.
Now I'm digging through some research on assessing orientation programs, which is tons of fun let me tell you.
It's our last week of freedom, so several of us are headed out to lunch today - the small town we work in has very limited options (pizza, or sub, or pizza? Or maybe a salad!), but we can drive to the slightly larger one - as long as we can take an hour twenty or so for lunch. The boss doesn't mind in the summer. Another ten minutes or so and we'll head out for delicious delicious Mexican!
I think I'll post this in parts because srsly guys this is long.
