On this day in 2007 a 20 year old girl, Sophie Lancaster, died as a result of injuries received in a beating 13 days earlier. When paramedics arrived at the scene they could not initially tell if Sophie was male or female she was so badly beaten. Her fiancé Rob was also beaten and injured in the attack and though he is alive, he has been permanently affected both physically and mentally
The reason they were attacked? Daring to look different.
Today, light a candle in memory of Sophie and spare a thought for all those she left behind and all those others who have suffered because they dare to be different.
There is a charity that has been set up in her name
The Sophie Lancaster Foundation which aims to combat the ignorance and fear that led to Sophie's death by education. There is also a myspace page
http://www.myspace.com/inmemoryofsophie and a
Facebook page, and you can buy merchandise to show your support (there are a fair number of SOPHIE - Stamp Out Prejudice Intolerance and Hatred Everywhere - wristbands visible at any gathering of British goths for instance).
If you want to find out more, google 'Sophie Lancaster' but be aware that any images from after the attack will be quite harrowing.
